Driving Teno Rural Park

Driving to Teno Rural Park offers a scenic journey through Tenerife’s diverse landscapes.

The only access route is TF-436 from Buenavista del Norte and Santiago del Teide. These roads are narrow and winding, providing breathtaking views of the island.

From Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital, it’s about a 1.5-hour drive (75 kilometers).

From the popular tourist destination of Puerto de la Cruz, expect a journey of about 1 hour and 10 minutes (40 kilometers).

From the southern resort areas like Costa Adeje, the drive is approximately 45 minutes (35 kilometers).

Public Transport in Teno Rural Park

To reach Teno Rural Park via public transport, you can take the TITSA bus services from various parts of Tenerife.

Bus line 355 connects Buenavista del Norte with Punta de Teno, passing through the park.

Another option is bus line 365, which travels from Buenavista del Norte to Masca.

The Lighthouse – Punta de Teno

Punta de Teno is one of Tenerife’s most dramatic locales, marking the westernmost point of the island.

It has panoramic views of the cliffs of Los Gigantes and the neighboring island of La Gomera.

The area is known for its iconic lighthouse, which has been guiding ships since the early 20th century. The rugged landscape and remote setting make it a stunning spot for photography and sunset views.

Access to Punta de Teno is controlled to preserve its natural beauty; you can drive there via the TF-445 road from Buenavista del Norte from 7pm to 10am.

On weekends and holidays, access by car is restricted, but the 369 bus runs from Buenavista and can take you for €1 per person, or you can make the 7-kilometer walk.

Best Parque Rural de Teno Hikes

These are our 4 favorite hikes in the Teno Rural Park!

#1 – Callejón de Teno – Cumbre de Baracán

This 6-mile loop trail, starting in the valley of El Palmar, ascends from the charming town of Teno Alto to the peak of Baracán.

Along the way, it offers stunning views of the Teide volcano and breathtaking landscapes.

The path is lined with a unique heather and laurisilva forest, flourishing in the distinctive altitude and humidity, but be prepared for rocky and narrow cliffside paths.

For those preferring a shorter hike, a 4.4-mile out-and-back alternative is available between Mirador Altos de Baracán and Teno Alto.

#2 – Camino del Barranco de Masca

The Masca Valley hike, traversing the ravine, offers a beautiful journey through stunning landscapes and natural water features.

🚨 Booking in advance is required for exploring Masca Ravine, either through the official Masca Trail website, a guided tour with Natura Xtreme Tenerife, or potentially at the Masca Visitor Center, although same-day entry isn’t always available.

This 5.3-mile trail, challenging in its terrain, is only open on weekends and holidays, and proper hiking shoes are a must. Staff will check!

The trail opens at 8:30 am, and it is advised to begin the return hike from the beach by 2 pm.

#3 – Roque de Abache

The Roque de Abache trail is a 3.2-mile out-and-back path that begins at the entrance to the hamlet of Los Carrizales.

Known for its windy conditions, this trail offers some of the most spectacular sunset views, with a panoramic vista from the top that includes Los Gigantes.

When we hiked it, we even spotted some goats along the way.

#4 – Risco Verde

Starting in Santiago del Teide, this epic 8.2-mile hike takes you uphill to Risco Verde and along the Cumbre de Bolico ridge, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of Masca Valley and the Atlantic Ocean.

The trail continues into the mountainous heart of Masca in Parque Rural de Teno.

To shorten the hike and be safer, we recommend catching a bus from Masca back to Santiago del Teide instead of walking on the road.

Alternatively, there’s a shorter 6-mile route that begins at Mirador de Cruz de Hilda and leads to Risco Verde.

Best Parque Rural de Teno Viewpoints

We have 3 favorite viewpoints in the Teno Mountains! They are:

#1 – Mirador de Cherfe

Located as the first viewpoint along the TF-436 road from Santiago del Teide, Mirador de Cherfe offers a sweeping view of the Teno Massif and the deep ravines that characterize the area.

This viewpoint is easily accessible by car and features a platform that provides a perfect spot for observing the geological contrasts and lush greenery of the area.

It’s a great place to take photos, especially during sunrise or sunset, when the light plays dramatically over the landscape.

#2 – Mirador de Masca

The Mirador de Masca is among Tenerife’s top viewpoints, showcasing expansive views of the Masca Valley and its impressive cliffs.

Positioned just before reaching Masca village, this lookout is easy to access and stands out as a prime location for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Visitors will find it an excellent spot for appreciating the area’s natural beauty and capturing stunning photographs of the dramatic scenery.

#3 – Mirador Altos de Baracán

Mirador Altos de Baracán provides a stunning overlook of the Masca Gorge and the surrounding mountains.

This viewpoint is accessed from the TF-436 road and is quieter and less frequented by tourists, providing a more serene experience. We found it much easier to find a parking spot here than the other viewpoints.

Montaña de El Palmar (Montaña Zahorra)

Montaña de El Palmar, also known as Montaña Zahorra, is a striking geological formation within Teno Rural Park, distinguished by its massive implosions.

While driving up to it, we were initially puzzled by its odd look and couldn’t tell what we were looking at (it almost looks like a sliced cake), until we consulted online resources and spotted a sign explaining it.

Its unique appearance results from picón being mined here, then some of the slopes eroded and collapsed, which has sculpted the mountain into its current form.

Best Parque Rural de Teno Beaches

We have 2 favorite beaches in Teno park. They are:

#1 – Playa de Masca

Playa de Masca is a secluded beach that is accessible by boat or via a hike down the Masca Gorge.

The beach is relatively small, with pebbles and clear waters.

Remember to pack water and snacks since this pristine paradise has no amenities but lots of natural beauty to enjoy.

#2 – Playa de Punta de Teno

Situated at the far western tip of the island, this remote beach has a mix of sand and pebbles and is notable for its striking scenery with the backdrop of Punta de Teno lighthouse.

It’s less crowded due to restricted access, which preserves its tranquility.

The currents can be strong, so it’s more suited for experienced swimmers or those content to enjoy the scenic view from the shore.

Restaurante Mesón del Norte Tenerife

Restaurante Mesón del Norte Tenerife, situated in Las Portelas in Teno Rural Park, offers a dining experience with of charcoal-cooked meats that is as inviting as the array of tables set with authentic wooden chairs in the portico.

Although there’s ample seating, reservations are recommended to avoid a wait, as the place is quite popular for its delicious, well-priced meals.

The grilled chicken and steak, particularly the Ribeye and T-bone, are grilled to perfection on a charcoal grill, delivering some of the most juicy, flavorful, and tender meats you’ll find on the island.

Restaurante “El Guanche ” Alte Schule

Restaurante “El Guanche” Alte Schule, celebrated for its top-notch dining in Masca, serves up authentic Canarian dishes alongside beautiful views.

The frequently have a line so be ready to wait your turn!

Don’t miss out on their eggplant volcano dish or their variety of cactus-based treats such as chutney, sauces, lemon mousse, and a cactus mojito.

Mirador La Cruz de Hilda

Mirador La Cruz de Hilda doubles as a spectacular lookout over Masca Valley and a cafe that’s become our favorite stop for a post-hike reward.

Enjoying a tasty sandwich, a traditional barraquito, or a cool glass of fresh juice becomes even better with the stunning backdrop.

Restaurante El Palmar, located in the village of El Palmar, has gained popularity for its exceptional chorizo bread, a starter that’s a hit with the locals and visitors alike.
