Day 1 of your La Gomera Itinerary focuses on exploring the Port city since you’ll likely be arriving there, and then enjoying the waters on a dolphin and whale-watching excursion.
Day 1 Morning
There is a lot to learn about in historic San Sebastian, making it a fantastic place to start off your La Gomera itinerary.
Embark on this great walking tour through San Sebastián, the historic heart of La Gomera, to hear the port’s stories.
With your local guide, you’ll learn about the lives of legendary figures and the island’s resistance against colonization, uncover Christopher Columbus’s last steps before his voyage to America, and explore monuments that mark this significant era.
You’ll also see the vibrant Canarian architecture, learn about pirate invasions, and admire the ancient murals in the Pilar Chapel in the Nuestra Senora de la Asunción Church.
This walking tour is a great way to introduce yourself to the island’s rich history!
Day 1 Lunch
For your first meal on this La Gomera itinerary, Restaurante Inta, just outside of San Sebastián de la Gomera, will win you over with generous servings and stellar service, specializing in Spanish and steakhouse offerings.
You must try the watercress soup and the perfectly tender octopus for a true taste of Canarian flavors.
Day 1 Afternoon
After lunch, head over to Valle Gran Rey for the top whale-watching experience in La Gomera.
Spend 3 to 4 hours on a traditional Canarian fishing boat for a close and genuine adventure, led by a crew that loves the sea and its creatures.
We had the chance to watch dolphins and whales right in their home, hear about their world from an expert, and enjoy the calm of the ocean. This was without a doubt our FAVORITE thing we did in La Gomera!

Day 1 Dinner
For your dinner plans, consider La Salsa in Valle Gran Rey, a standout for its culinary brilliance. We’re big fans of their fish soup, beef fillet, and the unique chocolate chili mousse – each dish cooked to perfection.
Dining here guarantees a wonderful meal, with the quality of the dishes doing all the talking. It’s a smart move to book your dinner reservation in advance to secure your spot.
La Gomera Itinerary Day 2 Details
Day 2 of your La Gomera Itinerary is all about hiking and exploring the Garajonay National Forest.
Day 2 Morning
La Gomera is home to numerous hiking trails, so we’ve selected two of our favorites for you to choose from that can be completed in the morning: one is easy and the other is more challenging.
The Ruta 10 Cañada de Jorge provides a family-friendly 3 km (1.9 miles) circular walk, perfect for those with children.
With gentle elevation changes, it’s a manageable 45-minute hike through the enchanting Laurisilva forest in Garajonay National Park.
Starting clockwise from the parking area ensures a smoother experience, as the initial descent is steep but the final ascent is gradual.
This lush forest walk is a magical experience we highly recommend.
The Ruta 18 Circular Garajonay hike, stretching 8.9 miles through Garajonay National Park’s stunning scenery, is perfect for nature lovers. It takes about 4-6 hours, so start early to get a jump on the day.
The hike begins at Cruce de Pajarito’s parking area and takes you through enchanting laurel forests to El Cedro. On your way back, via Roques de Ojila, expect vibrant plants and magpie-robins.
A highlight of the hike is the Ermita de Lourdes chapel, set in a beautiful location. For a quicker hike to the chapel, start from Aula Naturaleza, just over 1km away.
Day 2 Lunch
If you’re looking for a picturesque lunch spot between hikes, Las Hayas offers stunning views and a charming eatery, Restaurante Casa Efigenia La Montaña.
Here, you can savor local favorites like almogrote (spiced cheese pâté), Puchero (Canarian stew), and a delightful cortado (espresso and milk).
Day 2 Afternoon
For day 2 afternoon of your La Gomera itinerary, we suggest hiking to The Alto de Garajonay via the Ruta 7 El Contadero – Alto de Garajonay trail. This is the prime time to enjoy spectacular views from La Gomera’s highest peak.
This manageable 1.6-mile hike, about an hour long, kicks off at El Contadero’s parking lot and climbs to stunning views over the island, with El Hierro, La Palma, and Tenerife visible in the distance.
At 1,487 meters high, the summit was crucial for the island’s early inhabitants, offering ceremonial sites now accessible for visits. It also showcases the remarkable recovery of native vegetation following a 2012 forest fire, including heather and faya.
With interpretative stops along the way, part of the park’s free audio tour, you’ll learn about the area’s history and ecological resilience. Our own experience was unforgettable! We recommend hats and sunscreen as this hike had little shade.
Day 2 Dinner
For an unforgettable dinner, make sure to experience one of the most spectacular views of Vallehermoso in the northern part of the island. Nestled in Cruz de Tierno, within the Las Rosas area of Agulo, Restaurante Roque Blanco provides breathtaking vistas over Vallehermoso.
This restaurant is renowned for its delicious wood-grilled meats and traditional local fare, such as chicharrones with gofio, watercress stew, and chickpeas. It’s a must-visit for a truly memorable evening meal.
La Gomera Itinerary Day 3 Details
On Day 3 of this La Gomera itinerary, you will be making your way to the northeast part of the island for some cultural highlights and incredible views.
Day 3 Morning
Kick off the day at the La Gomera Ethnographic Park. Our visit was a real treat!
It was incredible to dive into the traditional life of the Canary Islands, from witnessing local craftsmanship to exploring ancient agricultural methods and charming old settlements.
To make the most of your stroll through the park, the farm, and the various displays, get the audio guide. They did a really nice job with it! Nicholas was particularly thrilled to learn about the banana trees and the diverse plant life.
And what’s a visit without experiencing the Silbo Gomero? This unique whistling language, used by locals to chat across the island’s sprawling landscapes, was absolutely captivating.
💡 Tip: Buying your tickets before you go is a wise choice to make sure you get to experience this living museum.
Day 3 Lunch
Terraza Restaurante Los Telares is a great place for lunch, as it is connected to the Ethnographic Park and farm. It boasts beautiful views and serves up a menu that blends classic Gomeran dishes with contemporary flair.
With top-notch local ingredients such as palm honey, Gomeran cheeses, and organic produce straight from their own farm, the restaurant offered us a wonderful lunch.
And don’t miss out on the carrot cake for dessert!
Day 3 Afternoon
The rest of the afternoon will be spent visiting our two favorite spots in the northeast of La Gomera, the Mirador de Abrante and the Pescante de Hermigua.
Mirador de Abrante provides a stunning viewpoint in La Gomera, sitting high above the clouds and offering sweeping views of Agulo and the distant Mount Teide on Tenerife.
Although the café at the viewpoint is no longer open, this location continues to be a top activity for the glass skywalk that juts out over the void.
The view of the beautiful valley beneath makes this one of the best things to do in La Gomera and a personal favorite of ours. You shouldn’t skip this stop!
The Pescante de Hermigua in La Gomera offers a peek into the past, where ancient industrial cranes, or davits, were utilized for loading bananas onto ships.
Now, it is a beautiful natural swimming pool, formed by the ocean and the remains of these cranes, providing a distinctive place for a cool swim with picturesque views of the sea and cliffs.
The Pescante de Hermigua is an essential stop for anyone wanting to experience swimming in a location that’s uniquely different from anywhere else on the island. If you do choose to swing, be careful! The water can be rough and there are no lifeguards.
Day 3 Dinner
Less than 5 minutes from the Pescante de Hermigua, you’ll find Restaurante El Faro. Here, they’re all about fresh, local produce, crafting a diverse menu with the bonus of stunning views. They even offer a rooftop for those cooler dining days!
If you are a seafood lover like us, you must prioritize this restaurant! Their menu has a range of ocean treasures like sea bream, tuna, bonito, sea bass, and shrimp. Trust us, we practically ate our weight in seafood here!
Swinging by earlier to book your dinner spot is smart, as seating is pretty limited.
La Gomera Itinerary Day 4 Details
Day 4 of this La Gomera itinerary focuses on exploring the various cultural facets of the island and understanding both the current inhabitants and those who have called it home in the past.
Day 4 Morning
In the morning, we’ve got two options for you, depending on what fits your interest more. Do you lean towards being crafty and enjoy making things, or do you have a passion for cooking and love to whip up delicious dishes?
The first option is to dive into a unique basket weaving class led by Zdenka, an enthusiastic organic farmer and botanist. She teaches about La Gomera’s nature, fascinating history, and distinctive climate.
Zdenka shares her bond with the island and the craft of traditional basket weaving, alongside serving tasty Canarian snacks straight from her garden, all set in the scenic backdrop of La Laja village.
By the end, you’ll have crafted your own eco-friendly basket, embracing the pleasure of creating something by hand in the tranquil beauty of La Gomera.
The second option we recommend is a class on making mojo sauce! Since we love to cook, this class was right up our alley!
It’s often said that if you visit the Canary Islands without trying mojo, have you truly experienced the Canary Islands?
We’re big fans of this activity as it plunges you into the essence of Canarian cooking through a practical mojo sauce-making session!
You’ll be part of a small group learning about rural life, local plants, and farming methods.
You’ll start with planting coriander or Canary chilies and then move on to gathering ingredients. You’ll get the hang of using the traditional pestle and mortar to whip up both green and red mojo sauces.
And the best part? You get to savor your handmade sauces with some tasty local potatoes or bread at the end!
Day 4 Lunch
Nestled right in the heart of San Sebastián, Restaurante Ambigú impresses with its dedication to Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine.
The grilled tuna, stuffed roasted peppers, and arroz caldoso (a deliciously brothy rice) were among our favorites.
Day 4 Afternoon
Your afternoon is another choice between crafts and food!
The first choice is to visit the charming village of El Cercado, celebrated for its traditional pottery. Here, skilled artisans use centuries-old methods to transform clay into stunning creations.
As you meander through the village, you’ll see these artisans at their craft, possibly even get a chance to shape your own masterpiece on the wheel and pick up a distinctive keepsake.
At the Museo Las Loceras – El Centro de Interpretación, you’re invited to learn into the island’s pottery traditions.
This museum presents the skill and technique of local potters with interactive displays and historical narratives, offering an immersive way to appreciate the island’s deep-rooted craft culture and the role of pottery in Gomeran society.
The second choice is to learn about La Gomera honey on a Flower Guided Tour with Butterflies and Bees.
We recommended this tour because it highlights the essential role bees play in nature and their importance to La Gomera.
You’ll have the opportunity to explore a butterfly oasis and step into the world of a lively beehive. The experience is genuinely enchanting!
Sampling the local honey was delicious and the experience of wearing a beekeeper’s suit was super fun!
For those fascinated by La Gomera’s plant and animal life, this tour is an ideal choice. It does a fantastic job of deepening your appreciation for honey production and the art of beekeeping.
Day 4 Dinner
For dinner tonight, head over Bar Restaurante Victoria in Cercado.
They serve up amazing goat and watercress stew that’s a must-try. We also fell in love with their queso frito (fried cheese) and prawns al ajillo (garlic shrimp).
La Gomera Itinerary Day 5 Details
For day 5 of your La Gomera Itinerary, it’s time to hit the water again and visit a beautiful winery.
Day 5 Morning
Kick off the last day of your La Gomera itinerary by diving into the open seas around La Gomera. Playa de Santiago in the south serves as your launching pad to some of the most exciting water adventures La Gomera has in store.
Got a boater’s license? You’re all set to pilot a high-speed boat, venture to hidden beaches, marvel at the cliffs, and cruise the beautiful southern seas.
Don’t have a license? That’s totally fine! You can still independently navigate La Gomera’s breathtaking south coast with an inflatable boat.
And if you’re someone who likes to keep it close to the water’s surface, there’s the option to rent kayaks and paddleboards.
Day 5 Lunch
While you’re in Playa de Santiago, make sure to visit Bar Terraza La Chalana. This family-operated beach bar, charming visitors since the 1980s, is known for its fresh seafood and picturesque location by the sea.
Don’t miss out on trying the Gomeran-style gambas (shrimp) in cured cheese sauce, all while enjoying the stunning views.
Day 5 Afternoon
The wine on La Gomera exceeded our expectations, and we highly recommend carving out time to visit a winery, especially Niray Winery, during your trip.
The guided tour leads you through the lovely vineyards, highlighting the Forastera Gomera grape, a unique local variety.
Your guide will illuminate both modern and traditional winemaking techniques, offering insights into grape cultivation on the southern slopes before a tour of the winery’s production facilities.
Naturally, our favorite part was the wine tasting, but the thoughtful addition of a tapa paired with each wine truly enhanced the experience.
Day 5 Dinner
Enjoy dinner in back Valle Gran Rey at Restaurante Abisinia, known for its superb fresh fish and tuna, accompanied by top-notch service.
Pair your meal with local Rajadero wine for a fantastic experience.
The cozy ambiance, with seating both inside and outside on a charming street, makes it an ideal spot for savoring Canarian and European dishes.

For your La Gomera adventure, we suggest making Valle Gran Rey your home base.
Recognized as one of the top places to stay on the island, this stunning valley offers everything from majestic mountain views to serene Atlantic beaches.
Whenever there’s a break in your schedule, take advantage of the beautiful beaches, including Playa del Ingles and Playa Valle Gran Rey.
Plus, you’re just a stone’s throw away from Garajonay National Park and prime whale-watching tours.
Our go-to hotel in Valle Gran Rey is Hotel Gran Rey featuring a beachfront location, tennis court, two outdoor pools, and a rooftop terrace with amazing views.
Another excellent option is Residencial El Llano, which feels like a resort with its large pool set in lush gardens, balconies in all rooms, and just a 10-minute walk from the beach.

Spain has a publicly funded healthcare system known as the Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS), which provides universal healthcare coverage to all Spanish citizens and legal residents in the Canary Islands!
