Getting Around La Gomera: The Landscape

La Gomera, the 2nd small of the Canary Islands, isn’t your typical flat island. It’s quite mountainous with a mix of breathtaking peaks and deep valleys.

The island itself is relatively small, covering an area of around 369 square kilometers (142 square miles), making it easy to explore.

An image representing the winding roads one might use when getting around La Gomera

Despite its rugged terrain, there’s a good network of roads connecting the various parts of the island. While you might expect the mountainous landscape to limit transportation, the roads here do a great job of making even the most remote spots accessible.

However, be prepared for some winding routes that offer stunning views but might slow you down a bit.

Most of La Gomera feels rural and untouched, with small villages and farmlands dotting the landscape. It’s not densely built up, and the road network respects the natural beauty, ensuring you’re never too far from an amazing view or a quiet spot to enjoy the scenery.

So what are the best ways for getting around La Gomera?

There are 4 main options: Car, Bus, Tour, and Taxi. Let’s get into the details of each option!

Getting Around La Gomera by Car

The easiest way to get around La Gomera is by car. It’s the best way to enjoy everything the island has to offer, on your schedule.

That being said, we recommend being very comfortable driving on winding roads and in mountainous conditions. There are very few straight and/or level roads on La Gomera. If you’re not on a curve, then you’re on a cliff ledge… or both! 🙂

If this is fine by you, then we say rent a car!

Renting a Car on La Gomera, Canary Islands

If you are renting a car for getting around La Gomera, you will need to get it at the main port in San Sebastián de La Gomera or the La Gomera Airport.

Here, you will find a few agencies to rent a car from. We recommend using DiscoverCars to book your rental car in advance to get the best prices.

We like DiscoverCars because it is easy to filter for the things we care about like an automatic transmission.

Renting a Car in the Canary Islands

If you are traveling to La Gomera on a ferry from Tenerife, you can bring your rental car with you!

We spent a month in the Canary Islands and rented a car for the entire stay, taking it with us to each island. It was convenient and hassle-free.

Plus, driving onto a ferry was honestly a fun experience! We do not have ferries near our home so this was a unique opportunity for us.

Driving in La Gomera Tips

Let’s cover some driving tips for navigating La Gomera with ease and safety:

  1. Make Sure Your Rental Car is Ready for Mountains:
    • Before you hit the road, double-check that your rental car is up to the task of mountain driving.
    • This means checking your tires for traction and air, ensuring it has enough power to handle steep inclines and declines without straining.
    • A car in good condition will make your drive smoother and safer!

  1. Monitor Your Speed:
    • With its winding roads and breathtaking views, La Gomera is a great place to take it slow.
    • Curving roads are a constant on the island, so keeping your speed in check is important.
    • Go the speed you are comfortable – we often found the speed limit to be much higher than we were comfortable driving and that is okay! It is not a race.
  1. Trust Local Signs Over Google Maps:
    • While Google Maps is a fantastic tool for getting around, keep your eyes peeled for local signs. On occasion, Google Maps would be off by 100 or so feet for a turn so paying attention was key!
    • Local road signs are your best bet for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be all set for an unforgettable road trip across La Gomera, enjoying its beauty safely and at the perfect pace.

Getting Around La Gomera by Bus

Getting Around La Gomera by bus is a fantastic option for tourists looking to explore the island without the hassle of driving.

The bus system, locally known as “Guaguas,” is operated by the company GuaguaGomera. Here’s how you can make the most out of it:

La Gomera Bus Routes

The bus network covers most of the island, connecting major towns, tourist spots, and hiking trailheads.

As you can see, the key routes link the main areas of the island like San Sebastián de La Gomera, Valle Gran Rey, Hermigua, and Vallehermoso.

To figure out the bus route that works best for your needs, we recommend using the Moovit App to find the right option.

A winding road surrounded by green palm trees and rugged hills under a cloudy sky, illustrating the peaceful experience of getting around La Gomera by car or bus.

La Gomera Bus Schedule and Frequency

Buses run daily, but the frequency varies by route and day of the week, with fewer services on Sundays and holidays.

It’s important to check the latest timetable, especially if you’re planning to travel early in the morning or later in the evening.

The most accurate schedule will be found either at the bus stops themselves or on GuaguaGomera’s website (only in Spanish). The Moovit App does a good job of updating the schedule, but we would double-check their information.

Additionally, the buses do not always run exactly on time so take this into account when planning your schedule! We recommend giving yourself 30-45 minutes of buffer time.

La Gomera Bus Tickets Cost

The rate for getting around La Gomera by bus varies depending on how far you travel. The rate ranges from €1 to €5.

You will pay on the bus with cash. Be sure to have small bills or coins since the bus drivers may not have any change.

You can also get a pre-paid card at the Bus Administration office located at the main bus station in San Sebastián de La Gomera.

Getting Around La Gomera by Tour

There are fantastic tours available in La Gomera that explore different regions. If you prefer to explore via tours, you can skip driving or figuring out the bus system.

Picking a reputable company for a La Gomera Hiking Tour is so important! Below is the company we trust to give you the best experience:

The main drawback of tours is that almost all of them require you to start in San Sebastián de La Gomera.

If you take this route, we recommend booking your stay at Parador de La Gomera or Hotel Torre Del Conde in San Sebastián and taking the following tours to get around La Gomera:

Taxis are available in La Gomera, especially in the San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey, but there are not a lot of them. This is our least recommended option for getting around La Gomera.

If you are looking to get around La Gomera by taxi or private transfer, we would recommend reaching out to the team at Taxi La Gomera to pre-arrange transport.

Another option is to reach out to your accommodation for assistance with arranging transportation. We noticed that many hotels have a go-to list of trusted transportation providers they recommend!

Generally, taxis charge a base fare plus a per-kilometer rate. The rates are always changing, and we highly recommend agreeing to a rate with your driver before you start.
