Absolutely! Caños de Fuego in La Palma is a must-visit for anyone fascinated by geology and natural wonders.

Its volcanic caves offer a unique glimpse into the island’s fiery past.

The Caños de Fuego Interpretation Center enhances the experience with informative exhibits. It provides a good opportunity to see firsthand how volcanoes have sculpted the landscape.

We enjoyed learning about the environmental significance and delicacy of the ecosystems around the visitor center, and how crucial their conservation is.

They have also recently updated the exhibits to include information about the 2021 Tajogaite eruption on the island that lasted 85 days and destroyed the town of Todoque.

What to Expect at Caños de Fuego (Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center)

Visiting the Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center was a highlight of our La Palma trip.

You will begin your visit in an exhibit area that has amazing visuals telling the story of lava and volcanic tubes on La Palma.

After the exhibit, you can watch a movie that covers both the lava as well as the impacts on life in La Palma.

Next, you can take a guided tour into the heart of the Cueva de Vidrio Volcanic Tube. It is not very large, but you get to see the main highlights of a lava tube.

Lastly, you can go down the boardwalk over the lava for a panoramic viewpoint! When we visited in 2023, there was still a lot of volcanic ash from the eruption in 2021.

It’s a cool experience as you stroll over lava, culminating with an incredible view into the Cueva de las Palomas through a glass viewpoint.

It is an easy walk down the boardwalk, but a little harder walk back up to the Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center. Expect about 30 minutes round trip.

🚨 You may have noticed that only 1 of the lava tubes is included in the Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center experience.

That is because going in the large tube, Cueva de Las Palomas, requires a separate tour. We cover that in this article as well (skip ahead to those details).

Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center La Palma Tour

The Volcano Visitor Centre La Palma offers an engaging 15-minute tour of the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube, typically departing every 30 minutes or when a maximum of 14 people has been reached and are ready.

This tour takes you into the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube, the smaller of the two tubes at approximately 575 feet in length.

Inside the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube, there’s a big cavern created by a gas explosion.

The cavern’s features are rough and jagged, caused by semi-solid roof plates that descended and created scratch marks, though they’re gradually becoming smoother over time.

This smoothing process is due to the constant moisture entering the cave, which slowly deposits materials and forms stalactites. These stalactites are growing at a very slow pace – after 70 years, they’ve only reached a little over an inch in length.

We learned all of this, and more, from the tour. We really enjoyed being able to ask questions to the guide!

The Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center in La Palma offers an affordable and educational experience.

Tickets are €8 for adults, with reduced rates for children and seniors, making it accessible for families and budget travelers.

You can pay €4 just to visit the catwalks, but we recommend buying the full ticket so you can visit the volcanic tube.

Allocate about an hour for the Interpretation Center to absorb the informative exhibits on volcanic activity. This also includes the tour of the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube.

In order to enter the lava tube, you MUST go on a guided tour

By Car

La Palma is well-connected by roads, making it easy to reach Caños de Fuego by car from major towns.

From Santa Cruz de La Palma (the capital): It’s about a 55-minute drive. Take the LP-2 road around the south part of the island. You can also drive through the middle of the island by LP-3, but it’s a much more windy road and won’t save you any time.
From Los Llanos de Aridane: This town is closer, just about a 20-minute drive. You’ll use the LP-213 road heading south. The route is scenic and well-marked.
From Tazacorte: It takes around 20 minutes. Drive south on Ctra. la Costa, and follow the signs for Caños de Fuego.

Parking is free and usually available near the Interpretation Center, but it’s advisable to arrive early during peak tourist seasons to secure a spot.

Public Transportation

Public transport on La Palma is reliable but less frequent than in mainland Spain. Buses, known locally as ‘guaguas’, connect major towns to tourist attractions.

From Santa Cruz and Los Llanos: Take a 300 bus to Los Llanos. From Los Llanos, take the 210 bus south towards Fuencaliente to the San Nicolás bus stop. Check the latest bus schedules as they can change seasonally.

They have amazing sopa de platano (banana soup) and solomillo de cerdo (grilled pork tenderloin and mushroom cream sauce). This was one of our favorite meals on La Palma!

Located close to Caños de Fuego, Bodegon Tamanca has a charmingly rustic ambiance reminiscent of dining in a cave.

Open for lunch, it operates on a first-come-first-served basis, so arriving early is a must to savor the amazing food and the wines produced from its own winery.
