Hermigua lies in the northeast of La Gomera, surrounded by green landscapes, large ravines, and the Atlantic Ocean.

If you are coming from San Sebastián de La Gomera, the island’s main port and capital, the distance is 20 kilometers and the drive takes roughly 30 minutes. The trip is mountainous and beautiful at every turn (and there are many!).

Brightly colored 'HERMIGUA' sign in bold letters stands out in a viewpoint overlooking the green valley and mountainous terrain of Hermigua.

The La Gomera airport is on the other side of the island from Hermigua in Playa Santiago. A drive from the airport in the south is around 35 kilometers and 50 minutes.

The Parque Nacional de Garajonay is very close to Hermigua, with only a quick 15-minute drive until you hit some of the best hiking trails in La Gomera.

We think Hermigua is in a perfect location for traveling around the island, especially if you love to hike and/or are looking for a non-beach stay.

BEST Things to Do in Hermigua, La Gomera

One of our favorite things about Hermigua is the amount of things to do there, both in the town and the surrounding area.

Our very favorite things to do in Hermigua are:

Explore the Ethnographic Park of La Gomera (Parque Etnográfico de La Gomera)

Culture enthusiasts will love this park as a fantastic way to dive into the island’s rich cultural heritage but we think everyone should visit!

You’ll get an up-close look at traditional Gomeran life and customs through interactive displays, authentic reconstructions, and a functioning farm.

A goat stands in the El Parque Etnográfico de La Gomera with mountains behind

We especially liked learning about Silbo Gomero, a whistling language used to talk across valleys. There are several demonstrations of the language which was very special to be able to hear!

It’s a hands-on experience that brings the past to life, and we recommend buying your tickets ahead of time. The park is open daily, making it a flexible addition to your La Gomera itinerary.

Hike to the Ermita de San Juan

The Ermita de San Juan hike in Hermigua is an awesome adventure for folks who love to lace up their hiking boots and hit the trails. This hike is a journey through some seriously beautiful scenery and a chance to see Hermigua from a whole new angle.

Starting near the scenic Mirador de San Juan, the 6.6-mile loop takes you up into the hills, offering stunning views of the valley and the ocean beyond. It’s not too long or too tough, making it perfect for a half-day outing.

The charming Ermita de San Juan, nestled amidst the greenery, seen by those enjoying the best hiking on La Gomera.

As you trek, you’ll wander through terraced fields and past old farmhouses, getting a peek into the rural life of La Gomera.

Dressing in long pants and sleeves is a smart move, as parts of the trail can be overgrown. Keep a GPS handy – we did not find the signage to be fantastic.

We found a tunnel near the summit of El Cedro; however, it was very muddy, so we will have to come back on a future visit.

Stroll through the Valle de Hermigua

Taking a stroll through the Valle de Hermigua is like stepping into a peaceful, scenic painting. This valley is a lush, green space where the mountains meet the sea, creating views that are simply unforgettable.

As you walk, you’ll pass by banana plantations, which are pretty cool to see up close. The valley also has streams and springs that add to its charm, making it feel like a natural oasis.

A scenic view of the rural village of Hermigua surrounded by dense greenery, banana plantations, and palm trees, with towering mountains in the background.

Along the way, there are spots to relax and enjoy the local vibe, whether it’s at a café with a view or a quiet park.

Trek to Mirador de Abrante

For the ultimate panoramic views that will take your breath away, you must visit Mirador de Abrante.

You can take the 7.6-mile trail that goes through lush landscapes, with many vistas of the north coast and Mount Teide in the distance.

Alternatively, you can drive. It is about a 30-minute drive!

The best time to go is early morning or late afternoon when the light casts a magical glow over everything.

Experience the Pescante de Hermigua

The Pescante de Hermigua is a cool and unusual swimming spot. Back in the day, it was used as a port for the banana production. Now, it’s a place where visitors can enjoy the ocean in a unique way.

There are several large concrete towers sticking out of the sea which you get to via a bit of a walk from the main parking area (about a half mile).

The tranquil natural rock pool at Pescante de Hermigua with crystal clear water lies beside the ocean, flanked by ancient-looking stone pillars of the davit.

People love coming here to swim in the sea pools that form around the towers. The water is clear and refreshing, but conditions can be rough so use caution if you decide to swim!

We decided to skip swimming and instead enjoy the views from Pescante de Hermigua. You can see the mountains and the ocean all at once.

This place is a bit different from your usual beach, and that’s what makes it special. Whether you’re swimming, sunbathing, or just chilling out, the Pescante de Hermigua offers a memorable experience by the sea.

Hike the Garajonay National Park

A short drive from Hermigua is Garajonay National Park. The ancient laurel forests and constant fog in the woods make it feel like you’re stepping into another world.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the park offers trails for every level of hiker, which is why we recommend everyone give it a try.

Admission is free. We recommend starting at the Centro de Visitantes Juego de Bolas to get recommendations on hikes and places to visit inside the park (but also get the Gofio Cookies at Dulcería Sabores Gomeros too 🍪).

Relax at Playa de la Caleta

For those looking for a peaceful beach day, Playa de la Caleta is Hermigua’s hidden gem. With its crystal-clear waters and pebbled shore, it’s a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, or just chilling with a good book.

The beach is more secluded than others. Remember to bring snacks and water, as amenities here are minimal.

We’d also bring a chair if you can since laying on the pebbles can be a bit uncomfortable!

A pebbly shoreline at Playa de la Caleta meets the azure sea with unique rock formations sticking out of the water and Mount Teide of Tenerife faintly visible in the distance.

Enjoy the Local Restaurants

No visit to Hermigua would be complete without trying the local cuisine. The town’s cozy restaurants serve up traditional Gomeran dishes that are delicious!

From fresh seafood to hearty stews, there are many options. Our favorites were a fish of the day and an amazing octopus. Plus, most of the restaurants have some incredible views and who doesn’t like a meal with a view?
