Day 1 of your La Palma 3 Day Itinerary is exploring Santa Cruz de La Pama and South La Palma.
Day 1 Morning
Start with a walking tour of Santa Cruz de La Palma to learn about the legends of the capital of La Palma and see Plaza de España, los Balcones de la Avenida Marítima, and the Castle of Santa Catalina.
The walking tour is a great way to learn about the history of the island before exploration.
Day 1 Lunch
Following the walking tour, enjoy lunch in town at Restaurante La Placeta, where the incredible food, including grilled cheese with mojos and exceptional sirloin tips, will surely impress you.
Don’t skip the opportunity to complete your meal with a barraquito, a coffee liqueur beverage beloved by the locals.
Day 1 Afternoon
The afternoon will be spent in south La Palma in Fuencaliente, so make the 30-minute drive down the LP-2 to Volcán San Antonio.
The San Antonio Volcano features a cool crater created by an eruption that occurred in 1677, offering stunning vistas. Now, there is a visitor center that highlights volcanic activities.
The visitor center is complemented by a path that circles the crater, allowing you to marvel at the expansive, gorgeous scenery.
We didn’t go around the entire crater since it is around 7.2 kilometers for the entire hike. There is a viewpoint at 0.6 km that you can turn around at.
For an entry price of 8 euros, the visit proved to be completely valuable, providing both a learning experience at the visitor center and breathtaking views around the crater. It’s an excellent spot for those interested in exploring the history and geology of volcanoes.
After exploring the volcano, make the 20-minute drive to the southern tip of La Palma to the Salinas de Fuencaliente.
These traditional salt flats are still in operation and produce salt by allowing the seawater to naturally evaporate.
Taking a relaxed walk through the salt pans was an experience we loved. Informative signs dotting the area provided insights into how salt is made while we enjoyed the stunning views.
Moreover, this region is renowned for birdwatching, especially during migration seasons. It becomes a haven for dunlins, plovers, sandpipers, and an array of 30 to 50 different bird species.
There’s no charge for exploring the Salinas Marinas de Fuencaliente, but you do have the chance to buy salt in their store!
Day 1 Dinner
Attached to the Salinas Marinas de Fuencaliente Information Center and Shop, you’ll find the Restaurante Temático El Jardín de la Sal.
This restaurant prides itself on delivering authentic Canary Islands dishes with a strong emphasis on the succulent seafood afforded by its oceanfront location.
The locally sourced salt from the adjacent Salinas de Fuencaliente plays a key role in their culinary creations, offering a unique taste of the region.
Positioned where the Atlantic Ocean meets the stunning salt flats, the restaurant provides the most picturesque setting for meals. Experiencing dinner here as the sun dipped below the horizon was unforgettable for us!
Recognized with a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand award, it opens its doors to patrons from Thursday to Monday, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
It’s a smart move to make a reservation ahead of time, especially during peak times or on weekends, given its sought-after spot and delightful dishes draw a crowd.
Day 2 of La Palma 3-Day Itinerary Details
Day 2 for when you visit La Palma is a trip to the highest points on the island to see the world-renowned telescopes and a visit to the Northeast part of the island.
Day 2 Morning
Kick off your day with the scenic drive to the island’s peak at the Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Center.
Allocate ample time for the journey.
While your navigation system might estimate just over an hour, we suggest setting aside a minimum of ninety minutes to two hours to reach the summit.
The route is dotted with numerous scenic viewpoints, including the Mirador de Los Andenes, where you’ll likely want to pause and soak in the views.
Morning tours at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory allow you to explore the telescopes starting from the visitor center. These tours offer a glimpse into the realm of astronomical research, bringing you face-to-face with the impressive telescopes.
Our visit included an unforgettable visit inside the Gran Telescopio Canarias, the largest optical-infrared telescope in the world, witnessing its seamless movements – it was truly a remarkable experience!
This adventure provides a unique opportunity to delve into the advanced technology behind astronomy and explore ongoing research in astrophysics.
Day 2 Lunch
Pack a lunch or some snacks to keep your energy up for the afternoon’s adventures.
At the summit, you won’t find any restaurants, only a vending machine located at the Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Center.
Day 2 Afternoon
For the afternoon, you will be spending time in Northeast La Palma.
Instead of going back down the way you came towards Santa Cruz, we recommend heading towards the northwest of the island.
Set your GPS for Túneles de Las Mimbreras. This will take you through tunnels on one of the coolest drives on the island on LP-109.
Another great stop after LP-109 is Mirador de La Tosca. This was one of of favorite viewpoints on the island.
Finally, make your way to the Piscinas Naturales del Charco Azul.
The Charco Azul Natural Pools are formed from volcanic activity and are renowned for their crystal-clear, azure waters. While there might not be enough time for a swim on this La Palma 3-day itinerary, they definitely merit a visit just for the view.
After, head to Bosque de Los Tilos, nestled in Parque Natural de las Nieves.
The forest of Los Tilos with its lush, green landscape sits in the heart of La Palma’s UNESCO-recognized Biosphere Reserve.
A variety of trails await exploration here but your schedule might only permit the brief 0.56 km circular hike to the Los Tilos Waterfall (Sendero La Cascada) and a visit to the visitor center.
Your last stop of the afternoon is to Parque Arqueológico El Tendal. Make sure to get there by 5pm since it closes at 6pm.
The El Tendal Archaeological Park offers a glimpse into the island’s pre-Hispanic era.
Nestled within the park, a cave extends 60 meters in width and 15 meters in depth, historically serving as a refuge for the Benahoaritas, the original people of La Palma.
It’s believed that around 15 to 20 Aboriginal individuals called this cave home before the 8th century!
On-site, a museum showcases an array of artifacts and displays that reveal the daily lives, utensils, and cultural traditions of the island’s early inhabitants.
Entry to the museum costs €8, which covers a guided tour through the park.

Day 3 Morning
Tucked away in the stunning Caldera de Taburiente National Park, the viewpoints Mirador de la Cumbrecita, Mirador Lomo de las Chozas, and Mirador de los Roques offer a spectacular chance to soak in the natural splendor of La Palma.
From these lookout points, you can enjoy unmatched vistas of the Caldera, a massive erosion crater that stands out in the terrain, revealing the island’s pristine and wild beauty.
We recommend the 3km (1.9-mile) hike linking these scenic spots.
To protect the fragile ecosystem, access to these viewing areas is controlled, requiring visitors to book parking spaces ahead of time, especially during busy periods.
We recommend starting early to witness the early morning light as it enhances the Caldera with vivid shadows and provides a memorable experience.
