Day 1 of La Palma Itinerary Details
Day 1 includes getting to know the history of the island on a walking tour, seeing some panoramic views of the capital, and spending some relaxation time at the beach after your travels to La Palma.
Day 1 Morning
Start your La Palma adventure with a Santa Cruz de La Palma Walking Tour. This two hour tour presents the most delightful method for discovering the capital of La Palma.
Strolling through Santa Cruz turns into a fascinating experience, given its recognition as an Asset of Cultural Interest, specifically as a historic-artistic monument.
The tour unveils the Flemish impact, the Civil Renaissance architectural styles, and the tales of a town steeped in rich history and art as you visit places like the Balcones de la Avenida Marítima and the El Salvador Church.
Day 1 Lunch
After the tour, lunch is in town at Restaurante La Placeta where you will be delighted with amazing food like grilled cheese with mojos and the spectacular sirloin tips.
Don’t miss the chance to round off your meal with a barraquito, a captivating coffee liqueur drink that’s a local favorite.
Day 1 Afternoon
Since you are probably either jet lagged or tired after traveling by ferry or plane to La Palma, we have a relaxing afternoon planned.
Start by driving to the Mirador de la Concepción. It is only a 15 minute drive up the hill to the very best panoramic viewpoint above Santa Cruz de La Palma.
Then, spend the rest of the afternoon at Playa de Nogales, a breathtaking black sand beach nestled along La Palma’s northeastern coast known for its sheer cliffs and crystalline waters.
Despite being just 30 minutes away from the capital, it has a remote feel with its steep descent required for access.
Day 1 Dinner
Dinner is back in town in Santa Cruz de la Palma at Restaurante Chipi-Chipi, a beloved local spot famous for its traditional Canarian dishes such papas arrugadas (wrinkly jacket potatoes) and gofio (Canarian flour).
The setting is stunning, surrounded by lush greenery, making it the ideal spot for a relaxed dinner for your first night in La Palma. When you go, you should try the sopa de picadillo.
Day 2 of La Palma Itinerary Details
Day 2 of your La Palma itinerary is seeing South La Palma in Fuencaliente. This includes salt pans, a winery, a volcano walk, and a Michelin-star restaurant to end the day.
Day 2 Morning
Start your day by making the 30-minute drive on LP-2 down to Fuencaliente, where you’ll make your first stop at Volcán San Antonio.
The San Antonio Volcano is a beautifully preserved crater with breathtaking views. It last erupted in 1677 and now is the site of a fantastic visitor center showcasing volcanic phenomena.
In addition to the great infographics, they have a volcanic eruption simulator and a trail encircling the crater to take in the vast, beautiful landscape.
With an 8 euro fee for access, we found the experience entirely worthwhile!
After a few hours at the Volcano, head over to Bodegas Teneguía, just a 2-minute drive away to dive into La Palma’s winemaking heritage.
This award-winning vineyard excels in telling the tale of its 70 years in winemaking, particularly with the Malvasia grapes.
Finish your time at the winery by sampling their exceptional selection of wine, and understand why it ranks as one of the best things to do in La Palma for enthusiasts of wine.
Day 2 Lunch
Lunch is right nearby at Restaurante La Casa Del Volcán where we recommend the ribs and sausage.
Day 2 Afternoon
For your afternoon activity, enjoy a visit to Salinas Marinas de Fuencaliente.
These traditional salt flats are still in operation and produce salt through the natural evaporation of seawater.
We loved exploring the salt pans with a stroll among the salt pans, where we found educational signs that shed light on the process of salt production and allowed us to take in the breathtaking scenery.
This area is also great for its birdwatching opportunities, particularly in migration periods, attracting dunlins, plovers, sandpipers, and between 30 to 50 other varieties of birds.
Visiting the Salinas Marinas de Fuencaliente and the surrounding lighthouses is free!
Day 2 Dinner
Connected to the Salinas Marinas de Fuencaliente Information Center and Store is the Restaurante Temático El Jardín de la Sal.
The restaurant specializes in local Canary Islands cuisine focusing heavily on fresh seafood. The salt from the nearby Salinas de Fuencaliente is a staple in their recipes, infusing a distinct local taste.
Awarded a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, it welcomes guests from Thursday to Monday, between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m, and books up quickly so grab a reservation ASAP!
Dining here at sunset was an amazing experience for us!
Day 3 of La Palma Itinerary Details
Day 3 is all about the stars. You will visit the telescopes that La Palma is famous for and see the stars yourself on a stargazing tour.
Day 3 Morning
Start your morning early by making the long drive to the top of the island and the Centro de Visitantes del Roque de los Muchachos.
🚨 Give yourself plenty of time to make the drive.
The GPS will say a little over an hour, but we recommend at least an hour and a half, maybe even two hours to get to the top. You will want to stop at the many overlooks along the way, like the Mirador de Los Andenes.
You can book morning tours of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory’s telescopes, which start at the visitor center. These tours give you a peek into the world of astronomical research and let you get up close with the incredible telescopes.
We even got to step inside the Gran Telescopio Canarias, the world’s biggest optical-infrared telescope, and watch the telescope glide smoothly – it was absolutely AMAZING!
This experience offers a special chance to dive into the cutting-edge technology used in astronomy and the current research happening in astrophysics.
Day 3 Lunch
Bring a lunch or snack up with you so you are fueled up for afternoon activities.
There are no restaurants up at the top, just a vending machine at the Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Center.
Day 3 Afternoon
Spending an afternoon hiking to Pico La Nieve which has one of the most breathtaking panoramas of the entire island. From the parking lot, it’s just a 1.6-mile trek to reach this stunning viewpoint perched at 2,239 meters above sea level.
If your schedule allows, also swing by Mirador del Espigón Aventura for another exceptional view of the Caldera de Taburiente.
Day 3 Dinner
Dinner is back in Santa Cruz de La Palma at Tasca Luis for local cuisine like squid and cazuela de pescado (fish stew).
Day 3 Nighttime Activity
After marveling at the giant telescopes, it’s your turn to marvel at La Palma’s starry sky wonders up close. For an unforgettable La Palma Stargazing adventure, we strongly suggest joining a tour.

Day 4 of La Palma Itinerary Details
Day 4 is the most popular hike of La Palma, the Volcano Route.
If you aren’t into hiking, there is also a Volcano Route Buggy Tour to see the area.
Day 4 Morning and Afternoon
The Volcano Route, also known as Ruta de los Volcanes, is a famous hiking path that cuts across La Palma’s southern volcanic ridge.
This trail starts at Área Recreativa El Pilar and has stunning vistas of fresh volcanic craters alongside the island’s varied volcanic terrains.
The hike is challenging, usually requiring about 6-8 hours to cover the 17.1 km (10.6 miles) distance. It’s recommended for trekkers to come fully equipped with water, snacks, and appropriate attire.
Access to the trail is free and does not require a permit.
If hiking for that long doesn’t capture your interest, consider the exhilarating buggy adventure along the Volcano Route instead.
Get ready for a 5-hour expedition that takes you through the essence of Cumbre Vieja Natural Park.
You will zoom past the new growth at the Tajogaite eruption site, rumble by the stunning peaks of San Antonio and Teneguía, and steer through lush rainforest trails.
This buggy tour is a great option to explore La Palma’s volcanic marvels from the comfort of a vehicle!

Day 5 of the La Palma itinerary includes exploring lava tubes, visiting the most popular beach on La Palma, and getting out on the sea on a yacht tour!
Day 5 Morning
Start your day by driving to the west part of the island to the Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center
Caños de Fuego is an incredible interpretation center focused on exploring the fascinating lava tubes that dot La Palma, making it a perfect destination for those intrigued by geology.
Recently, the center has refreshed its exhibits, offering insights into the 2021 Tajogaite volcanic eruption that took place on the island.
This dramatic event unfolded over 85 days, tragically erasing the picturesque village of Todoque, destroying 2,988 structures, and obliterating 74km of roadways.
For a fee of €8, the center includes a tour of the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube in your ticket. You’ll also have the opportunity to walk along an elevated pathway through volcanic terrain which was very cool!
If you’d like to explore the much larger Cueva de Las Palomas Volcanic Tube, you’ll need to book a guided tour in advance. You can do this in addition to or instead of the interpretation center. They complement each other well!
After a visit to the lava tubes, head to Tazacorte Beach.
Playa de Tazacorte, known for its unique black volcanic sand, is a haven for sun lovers on the western coast of La Palma, under the shadow of breathtaking cliffs.
Celebrated for its consistently sunny weather, this beach is an ideal setting for a swim in the transparent waters of the Atlantic.
You can relax under umbrellas, participate in aquatic activities such as snorkeling and kayaking, or take a leisurely walk down the scenic seafront walkway.
Day 5 Lunch
Our favorite beachfront restaurant at Tazacorte Beach is El Trébol to get the fish of the day.
Day 5 Afternoon
In Tazacorte, you can hop on a dolphin and whale-watching adventure with local tour guides, who’ll take you out to the sea to meet the dolphins and whales in their natural habitat.

This 2-hour catamaran cruise offers a peek beneath the sea’s surface off the north coast of La Palma with a glass bottom on the yacht.
The boat weaves through two enchanting caves, La Cueva Bonita and La Cueva Colorada, and sails past Puntagorda, Tijarafe, and Playa de la Veta. You’ll even get to marvel at a lava delta, a recent masterpiece sculpted by volcanic fury.
This was one of our favorite activities in the Canary Islands!
Day 5 Dinner
Remain on the west side of the island for dinner and sunset on the patio at Restaurant Las Norias.
They have awesome sopa de platano (banana soup) and solomillo de cerdo (grilled pork tenderloin and mushroom cream sauce).
Day 6 of La Palma Itinerary Details
Day 6 of the La Palma itinerary combines some great hikes in Caldera de Taburiente National Park with some awesome food on the west side of La Palma.
Day 6 Morning
To kickstart Day 6, head to Caldera de Taburiente National Park.
Nestled within the breathtaking Caldera de Taburiente National Park, Mirador de la Cumbrecita and its companion viewpoints, Mirador Lomo de las Chozas and Mirador de los Roques, are great places to witness the beauty of the park.
These vantage points offer unparalleled views of the Caldera, a colossal erosion crater that dominates the landscape, showcasing the raw and untouched beauty of the island.
We recommend the 3km (1.9-mile) hike that connects these viewpoints.
🚨 Given the delicate ecosystem, access to the viewpoint is regulated to minimize impact, necessitating advance booking for parking spots during peak times.
Spending a morning here, with the early light casting dramatic shadows across the Caldera, is an unforgettable way to begin the day.
Day 6 Lunch
Continue west for lunch at Los Argentinos de Los Llanos de Aridane for empanadas, croquettes, churrasco (grilled beef) and polvito for dessert.
Day 6 Afternoon
The Waterfall of Colors, tucked away in the Barranco de las Angustias ravine on La Palma, emerges as a mesmerizing spectacle where mineral-rich waters paint a vibrant masterpiece across the rocks.
To see it, hike the 6.9-mile out-and-back trail that meanders along the riverbed, leading to this natural wonder, with the journey through the canyon itself stealing the show.
If you’d like to hear stories about the history of this stunning national park, you can book a guided hiking tour of Caldera de Taburiente National Park to the Waterfall of Colors.
Day 6 Dinner
Dinner for Day 6 of your La Palma itinerary keeps you on the west side of the island at Restaurante Franchipani.
This is one of our favorite restaurants on the island because the dishes on the tasting menu have influences from every corner of the world and are paired with several wines and a dessert.
Day 7 of La Palma Itinerary Details
Day 7 of the La Palma itinerary is to see the amazing sites of Northeast La Palma, including a gorgeous waterfall, beautiful natural pools, and a 2 million year old forest. It’s a great way to finish your one week in La Palma.
Day 7 Morning
Start your morning by heading to Bosque de Los Tilos in Parque Natural de las Nieves.
Los Tilos is a forest with a lush, green landscape located within the UNESCO-listed Biosphere Reserve of La Palma.
There are several hikes to do here if you get there early enough, but you should at least do the 0.56 km loop trail to the Los Tilos Waterfall.
After any hikes you complete in Los Tilos, head to Piscinas Naturales del Charco Azul for a swim.
Piscinas Naturales del Charco Azul are natural sea pools formed through volcanic activity, celebrated for their clear, blue waters.
The pools are a popular spot for swimming and relaxing, particularly during the summer months. If they are overcrowded, the natural pools at La Fajana, just a bit to the north, are a great alternative.
Day 7 Lunch
Lunch is 5 minutes away from Charco Azul at El canal. They specialize in seafood, and we especially liked the calamari and tuna.
Try to make reservations in advance as it is a small restaurant and fills up quickly.
Day 7 Afternoon
After lunch, spend the first part of the afternoon (about an hour) visiting the Parque Arqueológico El Tendal.
The El Tendal Archaeological Park serves as a window into the Pre-Hispanic past of the island.
Within the park lies a cavern, stretching 60 meters across and 15 meters deep, which once provided shelter to the Benahoaritas, La Palma’s native inhabitants.
It is estimated that between 15 and 20 Aboriginal people made their home in this cave prior to the 8th century!
The museum displays a collection of artifacts and exhibits that narrate the everyday life, tools, and cultural practices of the island’s ancient residents.
Admission to the museum is set at €8 and includes a guided tour of the park. Our visit to this site was incredibly enlightening and enjoyable.
The next half of the afternoon is spent exploring Cubo de la Galga.
Cubo de la Galga, an ancient forest that is 2 million years old, is renowned for its thick greenery, featuring both ferns and laurel trees.
This area has a variety of paths that cater to hikers of all skill levels. The primary trail through Cubo de la Galga forms a loop that takes approximately 2-3 hours, providing a fantastic walking adventure.
Make sure you get to the Mirador de Somada Alta to catch breathtaking views of the nearby Canary Islands, Tenerife, and La Gomera.
Entry to Cubo de la Galga, along with its pathways, is free, making it a way to keep your trip to the Canary Islands less expensive.
Should you seek additional insights about the surroundings during your walk, consider arranging a guided trekking tour that includes fascinating stories like the one at El Salto del Enamorado (The Lover’s Leap).
Day 7 Dinner
Stay in the northeast for dinner in Puntallana at Restaurante Casa Asterio.
This restaurant is great for meat lovers, with goat meat being a specialty. Additionally, their chicharrones in gofio are an awesome way to experience the flavors of La Palma.

Any time is the best time for your La Palma itinerary! Thanks to its gentle climate, this Isla Bonita is a fantastic destination throughout the year.
In spring, between March and May, the weather is comfy, sitting at 18°C to 25°C (64°F to 77°F), making it prime time for trekking through blossoming wildflowers.
Come summer, from June to August, the mercury hovers between 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F), ideal for beach days and festival fun.
Autumn rolls in from September to November, with clear skies and temps ranging from 20°C to 26°C (68°F to 79°F), perfect for admiring the stars during the Festival of the Stars.
