What is Caños de Fuego?
Located in the Las Manchas area of Western La Palma, the Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center is both an educational center and an opportunity to explore lava tubes.
The network of volcanic tubes that Caños de Fuego is located on was created by the San Juan Volcano’s eruption in 1949. The caves are a testament to the power of nature!
The Caños de Fuego Visitor Center is a place where you can learn more about the lava tubes (and the caves they create) that emerge from the fiery heart of volcanoes.

Is the Caños de Fuego Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! Caños de Fuego in La Palma is a must-visit for anyone fascinated by geology and natural wonders.
Its volcanic caves offer a unique glimpse into the island’s fiery past.
The Caños de Fuego Interpretation Center enhances the experience with informative exhibits. It provides a good opportunity to see firsthand how volcanoes have sculpted the landscape.

We enjoyed learning about the environmental significance and delicacy of the ecosystems around the visitor center, and how crucial their conservation is.
They have also recently updated the exhibits to include information about the 2021 Tajogaite eruption on the island that lasted 85 days and destroyed the town of Todoque.
What to Expect at Caños de Fuego (Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center)
Visiting the Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center was a highlight of our La Palma trip.
You will begin your visit in an exhibit area that has amazing visuals telling the story of lava and volcanic tubes on La Palma.
After the exhibit, you can watch a movie that covers both the lava as well as the impacts on life in La Palma.
Next, you can take a guided tour into the heart of the Cueva de Vidrio Volcanic Tube. It is not very large, but you get to see the main highlights of a lava tube.
Lastly, you can go down the boardwalk over the lava for a panoramic viewpoint! When we visited in 2023, there was still a lot of volcanic ash from the eruption in 2021.

It’s a cool experience as you stroll over lava, culminating with an incredible view into the Cueva de las Palomas through a glass viewpoint.
It is an easy walk down the boardwalk, but a little harder walk back up to the Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center. Expect about 30 minutes round trip.
🚨 You may have noticed that only 1 of the lava tubes is included in the Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center experience.
That is because going in the large tube, Cueva de Las Palomas, requires a separate tour. We cover that in this article as well (skip ahead to those details).
Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center La Palma Tour
The Volcano Visitor Centre La Palma offers an engaging 15-minute tour of the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube, typically departing every 30 minutes or when a maximum of 14 people has been reached and are ready.
This tour takes you into the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube, the smaller of the two tubes at approximately 575 feet in length.
Inside the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube, there’s a big cavern created by a gas explosion.

The cavern’s features are rough and jagged, caused by semi-solid roof plates that descended and created scratch marks, though they’re gradually becoming smoother over time.
This smoothing process is due to the constant moisture entering the cave, which slowly deposits materials and forms stalactites. These stalactites are growing at a very slow pace – after 70 years, they’ve only reached a little over an inch in length.
We learned all of this, and more, from the tour. We really enjoyed being able to ask questions to the guide!
Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center La Palma Tickets
The Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center in La Palma offers an affordable and educational experience.
Tickets are €8 for adults, with reduced rates for children and seniors, making it accessible for families and budget travelers.
You can pay €4 just to visit the catwalks, but we recommend buying the full ticket so you can visit the volcanic tube.

These tickets provide entry to the center, where visitors can learn about the island’s volcanic history and explore the fascinating geological features of the region in an engaging and informative setting.
💡Tip: You can purchase a combo voucher at the Roque de los Muchachos Visitor Center, El Tendal Archeological Park, or Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center to save money visiting all three of these La Palma sites.
The Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center is open:
- 10am-6pm, Tuesday through Sunday
- 10am-3pm on Monday
There is also a cafeteria with some food and drink items that overlooks the lava flow towards the sea.
How Long for Caños de Fuego
For a fulfilling visit to Caños de Fuego, plan to spend around 2 and a half hours.
Allocate about an hour for the Interpretation Center to absorb the informative exhibits on volcanic activity. This also includes the tour of the Cueva del Vidrio Volcanic Tube.

The highlight, exploring the Cueva de Las Palomas Volcanic Tube, typically takes about 1.5 hours.
This allows ample time to marvel at the geological features and take photos. The visit is a blend of learning and adventure, ideal for a stop during a trip around La Palma.
The Cueva de Las Palomas Volcanic Tube Tour
Las Palomas Volcanic Cave, also known as the Tubo Volcánico de Todoque, is a fascinating highlight in La Palma, Canary Islands.
In order to enter the lava tube, you MUST go on a guided tour
(this is separate from the Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center).
The excursion must be booked in advance with companies authorized to visit the cave. You can not show up to the visitor center and expect a visit.
Picking a reputable company to visit the Cueva de Las Palomas is so important! Below is the company we trust to give you the best experience:
VIMOTIONS
The tour inside the Cueva de las Palomas volcanic tube usually lasts between an hour and a half and 2 hours.
Cueva de las Palomas is located at the end of the floating boardwalk that begins at the Caños de Fuego Volcanic Caves Interpretation Center.

This tube measures approximately 10 feet in width and 1800 feet in length. Parts of the cave can be narrow and uneven, so it’s important to be physically prepared.
The Cueva de Las Palomas Volcanic Tube features over 10 openings, offering natural light along various parts of the path. Many of these openings were once fumaroles, where lava and hot sulfurous gases escaped during the tube’s formation.
The interplay of light, shadow, and unique rock formations creates a surreal environment perfect for capturing stunning images.
Its significance is primarily geological, enhanced by its biological value due to the unique invertebrate fauna it supports. The cave serves as a habitat for various species, particularly bats that play a crucial role in the local ecosystem.
How to Get to Caños de Fuego
Getting to Caños de Fuego in La Palma is part of the adventure, and it’s fairly straightforward whether you’re driving or using public transportation.
Here’s a guide to help you plan your journey:

By Car
La Palma is well-connected by roads, making it easy to reach Caños de Fuego by car from major towns.
- From Santa Cruz de La Palma (the capital): It’s about a 55-minute drive. Take the LP-2 road around the south part of the island. You can also drive through the middle of the island by LP-3, but it’s a much more windy road and won’t save you any time.
- From Los Llanos de Aridane: This town is closer, just about a 20-minute drive. You’ll use the LP-213 road heading south. The route is scenic and well-marked.
- From Tazacorte: It takes around 20 minutes. Drive south on Ctra. la Costa, and follow the signs for Caños de Fuego.
Parking is free and usually available near the Interpretation Center, but it’s advisable to arrive early during peak tourist seasons to secure a spot.
Public Transportation
Public transport on La Palma is reliable but less frequent than in mainland Spain. Buses, known locally as ‘guaguas’, connect major towns to tourist attractions.
- From Santa Cruz and Los Llanos: Take a 300 bus to Los Llanos. From Los Llanos, take the 210 bus south towards Fuencaliente to the San Nicolás bus stop. Check the latest bus schedules as they can change seasonally.
- Bus Services: The main bus company on the island is Transportes Insular La Palma S.A. Their website provides current schedules and routes, which is handy for planning your trip.
Tips
- Check Schedules: If you’re relying on public transport, always check the latest bus schedules, as they can be subject to change, especially on weekends and holidays.
- Renting a Car: For flexibility, consider renting a car. This gives you the freedom to explore La Palma at your own pace and is especially useful for reaching less accessible attractions.
Remember, the journey to Caños de Fuego is through some of La Palma’s beautiful landscapes, so whether you’re driving or on a bus, enjoy the scenic views along the way!

📲 Will my phone work in the Canary Islands?
Maybe, but it will be expensive! Depending on your provider, plans can charge you $10 per day while in Europe. To use your phone in the Canary Islands and save money, we recommend an eSim with Airalo. Airalo simplifies the steps and provides you with all the necessary data for convenient travel. There is not a lot of free WIFI in the Canary Islands, so you’ll need your phone for navigating.
🌐 Do I need a VPN when on the internet in the Canary Islands?
While abroad, we consistently prioritize our online security by using a VPN to appear as if we’re streaming from the US and protect ourselves from cybercrime. NordVPN serves as an incredibly convenient solution for both mobile phones and laptops, effortlessly ensuring our safety while browsing or streaming.

🚑 Should I buy Canary Islands travel insurance?
100% YES! Spain has a publicly funded healthcare system known as the Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS), which provides universal healthcare coverage to all Spanish citizens and legal residents in the Canary Islands! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. We recommend Safety Wing – they provide general travel coverage as well as medical!

Likely Not! US passport holders don’t need Spanish visas for travel less than 3 months. If you plan to stay for more than 3 months, you will be considered a resident and must have an entrance visa.
