The BEST Things to Do in Montreux, Switzerland
Montreux, Switzerland genuinely is one of our favorite places in the world. It is absolutely stunning and there is much to do.
Here are the best things to do in Montreux:
Chillon Castle
Chillon Castle is the top thing to do in Montreux and a must-see for history lovers.
Located on the shores of Lake Geneva, it’s one of Switzerland’s most famous landmarks with origins dating back to the 12th century.

The castle has beautifully preserved rooms, including lavish halls and stunning frescoes, but our favorite part is exploring the eerie dungeons beneath. We joked that if you had to be locked in a dungeon… at least the view here would be great!
If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, both the 10-mintue bus ride from Montreux and the entrance fee are free.
Without the pass, it’s smart to buy tickets in advance to skip the line, as this is one of the most visited castles in Europe.
Montreux Promenade
Walking the Montreux Promenade is our favorite way to enjoy Lake Geneva, with stunning views of the lake and Alps.
The path stretches about 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles) from Chillon Castle to Villeneuve, taking around 1.5 to 2 hours to walk.
Along the way, you’ll pass beautiful flower displays, peaceful parks, and really cool statues.

Our favorite spot is the Statue Les Amoureux, a charming sculpture of a couple in love by the water.
There are some areas along the walkway where you can dip your toes into the lake!
Freddie Mercury Statue
The Freddie Mercury Statue is one of the things you’ll pass along the Montreux Promenade walk.
It was placed here to honor Freddie’s connection to Montreux, where he recorded his final albums with Queen at the nearby Mountain Studios.

Be prepared to wait, as there’s usually a line of fans wanting to take a photo with the iconic statue.
It’s a must-see for music lovers and a tribute to Freddie’s lasting legacy in the town.
The In the footsteps of Freddie Mercury Tour brings Freddie’s Montreux to life with exclusive audio and video content, making it a must for any Queen fan. You’ll explore Queen-related landmarks on a guided 2-kilometer walk and snap photos with the iconic statue by the lake.
Queen Studio Experience
The Queen Studio Experience is a small exhibition inside Montreux Casino where you can see memorabilia like Freddie Mercury’s iconic outfits.

We really enjoyed the interactive section where you can act like a music mixer, adjusting the volume of drums, bass, and more on Queen’s songs.
However, we were a bit underwhelmed since the whole visit takes less than 15 minutes. At least it’s free, making it a quick stop for Queen fans.
Montreux Jazz Festival
The Montreux Jazz Festival takes place every July and lasts about two weeks, drawing music lovers from all over the world.
You can expect performances from top artists in genres beyond jazz, with major stages set up along the lake and inside venues like the Montreux Casino and Auditorium Stravinski.

It’s one of the most popular events in Montreux, so be prepared for large crowds, especially along the Montreux Promenade.
Since this is a busy time, we recommend booking your hotel far in advance to secure a good spot.
Lavaux Vineyards
Visiting the Lavaux Vineyards, known for its Chasselas wine, is a must when exploring Montreux!
This UNESCO World Heritage Site features stunning terraced vineyards overlooking Lake Geneva, making it one of the best things to do in Montreux, Switzerland.

Our favorite stop is Domaine Bovy, a family-owned winery with an incredible view of the lake and mountains.
We recommend a Food and Wine Tasting Walk through the Lavaux region, where you can enjoy local wine and delicious bites while walking among the vines.
Montreux Market – Montreux Christmas Market
The Montreux Market (Marché Couvert) is open every Tuesday and Friday, where you can browse fresh local produce, cheeses, flowers, and other Swiss specialties.

It’s a lively spot to pick up regional products and experience a bit of local life right in the town center.
During the holiday season, the market transforms into the magical Montreux Noël, one of Switzerland’s best Christmas markets, with festive stalls selling gifts, mulled wine, and holiday treats.
The Christmas lights and decorations make it a special time to visit Montreux and soak up the holiday spirit.
Montreux Casino
At Montreux Casino, you’ll find a range of games like slot machines, poker, and roulette, making it a popular place for both casual and serious players.

But the casino is not just about gambling; it’s a lively spot for entertainment and nightlife. as it hosts live music events and shows.
It’s a great place to enjoy a night out in Montreux, whether you’re gaming or just soaking in the energy of the scene.
Montreux Old Town
Montreux Old Town sits above the lakeshore and offers a quieter, more historic part of the city to explore.
One of the key sights is Église du Sacré-Cœur, a beautiful church with stunning views over Lake Geneva.

The narrow streets are lined with traditional Swiss houses, and it feels like stepping back in time compared to the more modern lakeside area.
It’s a peaceful spot to visit, perfect for a break from the busy promenade.
Montreux Museum
The Montreux Museum focuses on the town’s history, showcasing local artifacts, old photographs, and traditional costumes from the region.
You’ll also find exhibits detailing Montreux’s development as a tourist destination and its famous connections, like the Montreux Jazz Festival.
It’s a small but informative museum in the Old Town, perfect for learning more about the area’s past.
Restaurant Le Museum
At Restaurant Le Museum, we had a break from fondue, which was refreshing after having it so often in Switzerland.

They bring mini grills right to your table, where you cook thin slices of beef fillet yourself. The sauces that come with the meat are especially tasty, adding a lot of flavor.
The restaurant is in a cute little building, making the whole experience cozy and fun.
Cruise on Lake Geneva
A boat cruise on Lake Geneva is one of the best Montreux things to do, with stunning views of the lake and surrounding Alps.
Ferries leave from the pier near the Montreux Promenade and trips range from one to two hours.

Many cruises go to nearby towns like Vevey and Lausanne, while longer trips reach the French shores of the lake at towns like Evian.
If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the ferries are free, making it an easy and scenic way to explore the area.
We love the relaxing experience, which is perfect for enjoying the beauty of the region from the water.
Montreux Jazz Café
The Montreux Jazz Café is a great spot to hang out and soak in the town’s rich musical history.
We like the laid-back vibe, where you can enjoy good food while surrounded by memorabilia from the Montreux Jazz Festival.
It’s a fun place to relax, grab a drink, and listen to live music performances in the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace.
The cozy atmosphere makes it one of our favorite spots in Montreux to unwind after a day of exploring.
Montreux Palace Gardens
The Montreux Palace Gardens are a peaceful escape in the heart of the town, with perfectly manicured lawns and beautiful flower beds.
We love strolling through the gardens because it’s a quiet spot to relax while still enjoying views of Lake Geneva.

The shaded pathways and benches make it a great place to take a break from sightseeing.
It’s one of our favorite spots to soak up the beauty of Montreux’s lakeside setting.
Gorges du Chauderon
Gorges du Chauderon is one of the best hidden natural spots if you’re looking for things to do in Montreux.
The trail winds through lush greenery and dramatic rock formations, following the Baye de Montreux River up into the mountains.

We love it because it felt like an escape from the town’s busy atmosphere, with peaceful views and a refreshing walk along the rushing water.
Musee Fort de Chillon
The Musée Fort de Chillon is housed in a network of bunkers and underground tunnels built during World War II to protect the region.
It’s much less known than Chillon Castle which is across the street, but you can explore the eerie caves and weaponry exhibits, and learn about Switzerland’s military strategy.

We were surprised by the entry price and that it wasn’t included with the Swiss Travel Pass, unlike many other local attractions.
However, if you’re interested in military history or unique underground spaces, it’s worth a visit.
Golden Pass Railway
The GoldenPass Express to Gstaad is hands down our favorite train ride from Montreux!
In just over 1.5 hours, you get to soak in some of Switzerland’s most breathtaking landscapes.
The floor-to-ceiling windows make the experience even better, letting you feel completely immersed in the scenery.

Gstaad, with its charming chalets and luxury vibes, is a perfect day trip from Montreux and a great way to experience the Swiss Alps.
Rochers-de-Naye
Rochers-de-Naye is one of our favorite mountain escapes from Montreux!
The ride up on the cogwheel train is always a blast, with panoramic views of Lake Geneva and the Alps waiting at the summit.

With the Montreux to Rochers-de-Naye Alpine Adventure Ticket, you can hop on the historic train and enjoy a self-guided journey.
It’s super flexible, letting you explore the stunning landscapes and steep mountain slopes at your own pace.
Chaplin’s World
Chaplin’s World in Corsier-sur-Vevey is a museum dedicated to the life and work of Charlie Chaplin.
The museum is located in the Manoir de Ban, where Chaplin lived for the last 25 years of his life.
You will explore his personal belongings, including photos, letters, and furniture, in the beautifully preserved house.
We recommend buying an admission ticket ahead of time to ensure entry and fully enjoy the Manoir experience.
Vevey Alimentarium
The Vevey Alimentarium is a unique museum dedicated to the world of food and nutrition.
We love learning about the science of taste and how our senses play a big role in our eating habits.

The interactive exhibits make it an engaging experience for all ages.
Outside, the giant fork sticking out of Lake Geneva is a fun photo stop and symbolizes the museum’s focus on food.
Les Pléiades
Les Pléiades is a peak above Montreux, making it a great escape into nature.
Springtime brings beautiful fields of blooming narcissus flowers, creating a picturesque scene on the mountain.

We always enjoy hiking here for the stunning views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding peaks.
Glacier 3000
A tour to Glacier 3000 from Montreux starts with a visit to the charming mountain village of Les Diablerets before taking the cable car up to the glacier.
Once at the top, you can ride a snow bus or walk across the world’s first suspension bridge connecting two peaks.

The views are unbelievable, with iconic sights like the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc in the distance.
Gruyères
Taking the train to Gruyères is our favorite trip from the Montreux area.
Once there, visit La Maison du Gruyère to learn about the famous Swiss cheese and enjoy some tastings, then head up to the medieval Gruyères Castle for a bit of history.

Switzerland Travel Planning Guide
🚙🚄 Is renting a car or public transportation better in Switzerland?
For traveling in Switzerland, we recommend using public transportation. Switzerland’s train system and other public transportation options are some of the best in the world.
We always buy the Swiss Travel Pass, which provides access to trains, funiculars, boats, lifts, and buses. It also gives you free access to over 500 museums.
Renting a car in Switzerland has its pros and cons. Pro: You get the freedom to explore at your own pace and visit remote areas. Con: Parking can be expensive and challenging in cities. When we rent a car, we always use Discover Cars for reliable service.
📲 Will my phone work in Switzerland?
Maybe, but it will be expensive! Depending on your provider, plans can charge you $10 per day while in Europe.
To use your phone in Switzerland and save money, we recommend an eSim with Airalo. Airalo simplifies the steps and provides you with all the necessary data for convenient travel.
There is not a lot of free WIFI in Switzerland, so you’ll need your phone for navigating.
🌐 Do I need a VPN when on the internet in Switzerland?
While abroad, we consistently prioritize our online security by using a VPN to appear as if we’re streaming from the US and protect ourselves from cybercrime.
NordVPN serves as an incredibly convenient solution for both mobile phones and laptops, effortlessly ensuring our safety while browsing or streaming.
🏩 What’s the best way to book my Switzerland accommodations?
Our go-to for Switzerland hotels is Booking.com. They offer the widest range of choices, and their filtering system simplifies the process of discovering the perfect accommodation for your needs.

For finding cheap flights to Switzerland, we recommend Kayak. Their awesome multi-city flight search and handy price notifications help us save big, allowing us to splurge on other adventures once we arrive.
Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is usually our airline of choice while in Switzerland.
🚐 Should I book tours in Switzerland? Do the guides speak English?
We LOVE taking tours in Switzerland.
We prefer to book our tours on Viator and GetYourGuide for easy searching, trusted reviews, and transparent pricing. We always filter for the tours that are offered in English.
For free walking tours in English, we always book through GuruWalk.
🚑 Should I buy Switzerland travel insurance?
100% YES! Switzerland has a publicly funded healthcare system known as the LAMal (L’Assurance Maladie Obligatoire), also known as the Swiss Health Insurance Law, which provides basic health insurance to all Swiss citizens and legal residents!
Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. We recommend Safety Wing – they provide general travel coverage as well as medical!
💧Can you drink the water in Switzerland?
Drinking water in Switzerland is exceptionally safe and clean. You can drink tap water anywhere, and it’s often better than bottled water.
There are many public fountains in cities and towns where you can fill your water bottle. If a fountain is not safe to drink from, there will be a sign indicating this. Generally, no sign means the water is safe to drink.
For an extra layer of protection, we recommend always using a LifeStraw Go Series to stay safe and hydrated.

Citizens of the European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries do not need a visa for short stays.
