Geneva is absolutely worth visiting. We were honestly blown away by how much we enjoyed our time in Geneva.
It’s a city, but it has a very cool vibe that sets it apart from other Swiss and European cities. We even ended up rearranging our schedule to spend another half-day exploring places we couldn’t fit into our original Geneva plan.
We would not skip Geneva if your trip to Switzerland takes you to this region!

HUGE Array of Activities:
There is a ton to do in Geneva. Want to visit old churches, or go on an old town walking tour, or visit museums, or visit a bathhouse, or eat Swiss food, or eat international food, or explore stunning botanical gardens by the lake, or take a boat tour? These are just a *few* examples of all the awesome activities in Geneva.
Easy to Navigate:
Switzerland has great transportation (trains, buses, trams, etc.) in general. Additionally, Geneva’s main area is pretty compact and easy to navigate on foot which means you can pack more into an itinerary.
It’s Tourist Friendly but Not “Touristy”:
Geneva is an international city with tons of people going to and from it for work or pleasure every day. This means it is very easy to get around as a Tourist – great signage, easy to interact in English, and many options for exploring.
The Beauty:
Geneva sits right on the edge of Lake Geneva, with breathtaking views of the surrounding Alps and Jura mountains. To be fair, all of Switzerland is beautiful and Geneva is no exception.

Truthfully, we do not have much negative to say about Geneva but in an effort to provide you with all the information, here are a couple of things you might want to consider when deciding “Is Geneva worth visiting”.
It is Pricey:
The prices are definitely higher in Geneva, especially compared to neighboring France and Italy.
However, this is going to be consistent across ALL of Switzerland. We recommend being able to budget at least $200 per person per day to travel in Switzerland.
The good thing about Geneva is that because of the size of the city, there are a lot more options than other Swiss destinations. This makes it easier to stretch your dollar.
Geneva is Always Busy:
Geneva is a hub for business and it is pretty much always busy. There is not really a “slow” season here since tourism is not their focus.

1. Take a Boat Ride on Lake Geneva
A boat ride on Lake Geneva is a must-do. You’ll get stunning views of the surrounding Alps, the Geneva skyline, and the *amazing* lakeside houses (well, mansions).
It’s a relaxing way to see the beauty of the lake and get some fantastic photos.

2. See the Jet d’Eau Up Close
While the name Jet d’Eau might not be familiar, we are sure you know this iconic Geneva landmark.
Jet d’Eau is a massive water fountain that shoots 140 meters into the air and is visible from various points in the city. Getting up close to it allows you to feel the power of the spray (you will get wet) and appreciate the engineering behind it.
Something we found interesting is that it does not run 24 hours! The hours change based on the season, but typically it is from 10am to 10pm.
3. Explore the Old Town
Geneva’s Old Town, known as Vieille Ville, is full of history and charm – we loved exploring this area!
Wandering through its narrow, cobblestone streets, you’ll find historic buildings, beautiful squares, and quaint cafes.
Two of our favorite spots were Place du Bourg-de-Four, a lively square filled with cafes and shops, and L’Ancien Arsenal, with its impressive cannons and historical murals.
The best way to truly experience Vieille Ville is by taking the Geneva 3-hour Chocolate Tasting Tour and Old Town Visit, where you can indulge in delicious Swiss chocolate while learning about the area’s rich history.
4. Climb to the Top of St. Pierre Cathedral
Climbing the towers of St. Pierre Cathedral has one of the best views in Geneva. The cathedral itself is a masterpiece of architecture, dating back to the 12th century.
To reach the top of the towers at St. Pierre Cathedral in Geneva, you’ll need to climb about 157 steps. The climb is worth it for the fantastic views of the city, the lake, and the surrounding mountains.
As for the cost, it’s approximately 7 CHF (Swiss Francs) for adults.
5. Tour the United Nations Office
For us, Geneva is synonymous with the United Nations, so taking a tour of the UN Office was a must!
The tour gives you insight into the workings of international relations and peacekeeping. You must book in advance – the tours have limited spots and are very popular.
It’s a unique experience to see where important global decisions are made. It is also the only way to go on the grounds of the UN.
You must also see the Broken Chair while visiting the UN. It’s a powerful 12-meter-tall sculpture symbolizing the fight against landmines and supporting human rights.
6. Take a walk in the Parc de Bastions
Visiting the Reformation Wall in Parc de Bastions is a must for history enthusiasts, as it commemorates key figures of the Protestant Reformation with impressive stone statues.
The park itself is a lovely place to relax, with giant chess and checkers games that are fun for all ages.
Don’t miss a stop at the Kiosque des Bastions, a charming café perfect for a quick snack or coffee.
For a unique perspective, head up to the Promenade de la Treille above the park, where you’ll find one of the longest wooden benches in the world, offering beautiful views over Geneva.
7. Visit the Red Cross Museum
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum is a deeply moving experience.
The exhibits highlight humanitarian efforts worldwide, showcasing the impact of the Red Cross. It’s both educational and inspiring, offering a different perspective on global issues.

8. Check the time at the Flower Clock
Visiting Geneva’s famous Flower Clock in the English Garden is a delightful experience, where you can admire the intricate design made up of thousands of colorful flowers that change with the seasons.
The Flower Clock (L’Horloge Fleurie) isn’t just a beautiful display; it reflects the city’s famous watchmaking heritage. It has the longest second hand on a clock in the world, measuring around 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) in length.
The English Garden (Jardin Anglais) itself is a beautiful green space perfect for a leisurely stroll, right in the heart of the city.
Nearby, you’ll find the Geneva Ferris Wheel, which has fantastic views of the lake and city skyline from above.
The park is also home to the National Monument, a striking statue commemorating the union of Geneva with the Swiss Confederation in 1814.

We really enjoyed visiting the Patek Philippe Museum, a museum dedicated to the art of watchmaking.

The Botanical Gardens in Geneva are peaceful and absolutely stunning!
Home to thousands of plant species, the gardens are a beautiful setting for a leisurely walk. Plus, it is right by Lake Geneva and is FREE!
11. Relax at Bains des Pâquis
Bains des Pâquis is a local favorite and a unique way to experience Lake Geneva. Bains des Pâquis is a public bathhouse featuring swimming areas, saunas, and a lakeside restaurant.
It’s a great spot to unwind and enjoy the water. Many people enjoy this experience in the nude so keep this in mind if you’re traveling with the family!

One day in Geneva will feel rushed, but it is doable to see the main highlights.
