We really enjoyed our time in Montreux, with Chillon Castle being one of the most memorable parts of our visit.

From here, it’s easy to reach beautiful lakeside towns like Lausanne, Vevey, and even Geneva. You can spend a day tasting wine in the Lavaux Vineyards or cruise to different towns along the lake.
But what makes Montreux special is how well it connects to even more distant destinations for day trips like Interlaken and Zermatt. We loved being able to explore the peaceful lakeside towns and then easily head into the heart of the Swiss Alps for hiking and adventure.
If you want a base that offers flexibility for exploring both the Lake Geneva region and Switzerland’s iconic mountain destinations, Montreux is hard to beat.
If you’re into jazz or a big fan of Freddie Mercury and Queen, Montreux will definitely be a treat for you. As Queen fans, we were excited to see the influence of Freddie Mercury everywhere we went, from the statue on the promenade to the studio experience at the casino.
However, we have to say the food didn’t blow us away like it has in other Swiss cities, and Montreux’s Old Town and historical sites aren’t as impressive as what you’ll find in places like Basel, Bern, or Lucerne.

The lakeside views with the Alps in the background are hard to beat, and the Montreux Promenade was one of our favorite places to take a stroll.
Compared to Geneva, Montreux feels much calmer, making it the perfect place to relax.
We found the setting even more peaceful than Lausanne or Vevey, which have more hustle and bustle, so if you’re looking for a serene escape, Montreux is a great choice.

We love Montreux’s deep connection to music.
The Montreux Jazz Festival is world-famous, and even if you’re not visiting during the festival, you can feel the town’s musical vibe, especially when you see the Freddie Mercury statue.

Geneva and Lausanne both have their own cultural scenes, but Montreux stands out for its unique place in music history, and as big Queen fans, we loved that connection.

We found Montreux to be a bit on the expensive side, especially during the summer. Hotels and meals add up quickly, and it’s easy to go over budget if you’re not careful.
While Geneva can be pricey too, we felt that Montreux didn’t have as many budget-friendly options compared to Lausanne or Vevey.
If you’re visiting during the Jazz Festival, expect prices to climb even higher, so plan accordingly.
2. Smaller, Less Lively
Montreux can feel quiet, especially if you’re visiting outside of festival season.
While we enjoyed the calm atmosphere, we noticed there weren’t as many restaurants, museums, or shops to explore compared to Geneva.
If you’re someone who loves the energy of a bigger city, Montreux might feel a bit too slow.
We personally enjoyed the relaxed vibe, but we can see how others might find it a bit too sleepy, especially at night if you don’t enjoy gambling at a casino.
3. Tricky Transportation System
Unlike Geneva and Lausanne, Montreux doesn’t have a metro system, which we found a bit limiting when compared to those larger cities.
However, the bus system in Montreux is very good, and it’s easy to get around town using public buses. We never had trouble getting where we needed to go.
Another tricky aspect of Montreux’s transportation system is figuring out how to get to the train station from the promenade and main street.
The station is located above the town, and while there are escalators and stairs to reach it, they are somewhat tucked away and tricky to find, but we eventually figured it out!

We loved exploring the castle’s grand halls, but our favorite part was wandering through the eerie dungeons.
It’s also an easy visit with the Swiss Travel Pass, which covers both the bus ride from Montreux and the entrance fee.
If you’re not using the pass, we suggest booking tickets in advance to skip the line. This place gets busy!
2. Montreux Promenade
We’ve walked along a lot of lake promenades, but Montreux’s is one of our favorites.
Stretching from Chillon Castle to Villeneuve, this 5.8 km (3.6 miles) path gives you stunning views of both the lake and the Alps.
It’s peaceful, and we loved passing by the beautiful flowers and sculptures, especially the Les Amoureux statue.
It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, and the views are amazing the whole way.
