In terms of accessibility, the Grand Canyon and Sedona are both relatively remote. They both have regional airports for small planes, but you will likely fly into a major airport in the vicinity and drive.

The Grand Canyon can be reached by car or shuttle from Las Vegas (4 hours) and Phoenix (3.5 hours).

Sedona is also accessible by car or by shuttle from Phoenix (2 hours) and Las Vegas (4.5 hours).

Since Sedona is closer to Phoenix, it is easier to drive to than the Grand Canyon.

If you want to quickly get to the Grand Canyon, you can take a day trip via helicopter or airplane tour from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon to see the canyon from above.

Sedona has a milder climate than the Grand Canyon.

During the summer, Sedona typically experiences temperatures ranging from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while Grand Canyon temperatures can reach into the triple digits.

In the winter, Sedona’s temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, while Grand Canyon temperatures can dip below freezing.

When we visited in the winter, we found some snow in both places. The Grand Canyon, however, had a lot of ice on the paths. If you are visiting during this time, we recommend crampons for your shoes.

Both Sedona and the Grand Canyon have spectacular activities.

Sedona Top Activities

Sedona is home to a variety of activities that are sure to delight anyone you are traveling with.

• Spiritual Vortexes – If you want to experience the powerful energy and mysticism of the Sedona spiritual vortexes, taking a vortex tour is the perfect way to do it. During the tour, you’ll get to visit some of Sedona’s most renowned vortex sites and learn about their history and significance from an experienced guide. As you explore the sites, you’ll be able to feel the energy and might even experience a sense of enlightenment. 🌬

While the Grand Canyon does not have the variety of activities that Sedona offers, they are very memorable activities nonetheless!

• Van Tours – A great option to see the viewpoints at the Grand Canyon is a van tour. On the tour, the guide will explain what you are looking at, answer any questions, and help take photos! It is a great way to get more out of your Grand Canyon exploration. 🚐

• Rafting – Rafting down the Colorado River is an exceptional experience! You can do a 1-day trip but if you can do a multiple-day trip, it is highly recommended! It is a fantastic way to disconnect while experiencing the grandness of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. 🛶

• Helicopter Tour – Until you’ve seen the Grand Canyon, you can’t truly appreciate how… well, grand it is! A Helicopter tour is 100% the best way to illustrate this and be able to see more of the canyons. 🚁

• Education Programs – The Park Rangers at the Grand Canyon do a terrific job curating exhibits to inform visitors. At the Grand Canyon’s visitor centers and museums, you’ll find programs on geology, wildlife, astronomy, hiking, history, and more. The knowledgeable rangers can answer any questions you have. Both Sedona and the Grand Canyon are stunning destinations for hikers, offering unique experiences with some of the most breathtaking natural scenery in the United States.

When comparing hiking in Sedona vs Grand Canyon, it’s important to note that they provide very different experiences.

The hiking trails around Sedona are typically moderate to challenging. Many trails require hiking up to a cave or natural bridge or mesa which requires some extra climbing using your arms.

At Sedona, you’ll be able to make your way up steep hills and mountains for stunning panoramas of red-rock formations in every direction.

In contrast, hiking at the Grand Canyon can be a bit more accessible since there are plenty of flat trails with stunning views.

The Rim Trail stretches for 13 miles and is mostly paved. You’ll be able to explore the many layers of rock formations, as well as see the Colorado River which carves through the canyon.

Additionally, the Grand Canyon also offers many difficult overnight hikes that we will highlight below if you want to hike into the canyon and reach the Colorado River.

Ultimately, the decision between hiking in Sedona vs Grand Canyon comes down to personal preference and what you’re looking for in your experience.

Sedona Top Hikes

The stunning beauty of Sedona draws hikers from all over the world.

Hiking is a popular pastime for those looking to explore this natural wonderland. With over 140 trails, there are plenty of options for hikers of all skill levels.

The Devil’s Bridge

The Devil’s Bridge Trail in Sedona, Arizona is one of the most iconic hikes in the area.

It’s a short and moderate 4.2-mile loop featuring a spectacular natural arch and gorgeous views of Sedona’s famous red rocks.

The trail begins at the Devil’s Bridge Trailhead and follows the dry, rocky creek bed up to the bridge.

Along the way, you’ll pass by multiple red rock formations and get a feel for the unique landscape that Sedona has to offer before a dramatic elevation gain up to the bridge at the end of the hike.

Once you reach the bridge, make sure to take some time to admire the incredible views and get some great pictures. The wait can be 30 minutes to an hour to get on the bridge for a picture during peak season.

It is not for those afraid of heights! From the trailhead, it’s about a two-hour round trip so make sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen for your hike.

Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock Trail is one of the best places in Sedona to see the sunrise.

While it is only 1.2 miles round trip, it is a strenuous hike to the top that requires many times where you have to pull yourself up the rocks.

It is a beautiful view into the valley and has a great view of the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the distance behind you. Once you reach the top, we recommend walking out on the right to get to a ledge where the best picture can be taken.

Boynton Canyon

Boynton Canyon Trail is home to the most famous tunnel cave in the area, called the subway tunnel cave because it looks like a subway platform.

It is 3.1 easy miles to get to the cave, but it is difficult to pull yourself up the entrance.

Sedona has many more incredible hikes, including Soldier Pass Cave, that will keep you immersed in the gorgeous area for days.

Grand Canyon Top Hikes

From flat trails with stunning views to challenging overnight hikes, the Grand Canyon has something for everyone.

Bright Angel

The Bright Angel Trail at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is a must-do hike for first-time visitors. With its steep incline, it’s not for the faint of heart.

However, its well-defined trails and occasional shade make this hike a rewarding experience that you will never forget. If you’re doing the hike in a single day, make sure to turn around at the first resthouse located 1.5 miles into the hike.

Water is available on the trail from May-September, so make sure to take advantage of this when it’s hot.

When you arrive, you can park near the Bright Angel Lodge or, if that’s full, the parking lot by Masswik Lodge. Take your time and rest often as you descend and ascend the canyon.

With its stunning views, it’s a hike that will stick with you for years to come. Enjoy it!

South Kaibab

The South Kaibab Trail is an exhilarating way to explore the Grand Canyon, as it takes you on a steep descent into its depths.

The trail offers breathtaking views of the colorful canyon walls and the beautiful valley below, making it one of the most stunning and dramatic trails in the park.

Our recommendation is to hike 1.5 miles into the trail and reach Cedar Ridge, then return by the same path and exit the canyon.

Restrooms are present at Cedar Ridge, but please note that there is no water available on this trail. It is advised to bring an adequate supply of water with you.

Rim Trail

The Rim Trail is a stunning 13-mile stretch of pavement that winds around the dramatic edges of the Grand Canyon. This trail is perfect for anyone looking to take in breathtaking views without having to worry about navigating technical or strenuous terrain.

Along the way, you’ll be able to explore the edge of the canyon and take in stunning vistas at each overlook. You can choose to do as much or as little of the trail as you want, with each stretch between overlooks usually being less than a mile.

The Grand Canyon is known for its camping. When camping at the Grand Canyon, you’ll have the wonderful opportunity to see the stars with little light pollution.

The Mather Campground at the South Rim Village is open year-round and is in a great location.

Yavapai Lodge is our favorite lodging at the Grand Canyon. It is located in the park, has nice rooms, and 2 on-site restaurants. It does book up quickly so be sure to get your room as soon as possible!

We recommend booking your camping or lodging a year in advance if you are looking to stay in the park. Otherwise, accommodations can be found in Tusayan.

Camping in the Grand Canyon is an incredibly unique experience, but the range of choices and modern luxury give Sedona the nod as the place with the better accommodations.

Which has Better Food? Sedona vs Grand Canyon

Sedona has much better food than the Grand Canyon.

During our visits to the Grand Canyon, we haven’t had many meals that stood out in our memory.

Bright Angel Bicycle Rental and Café is a good place to grab a quick snack. Yavapai Tavern and the El Tovar Dining Room can provide a good dinner.

In comparison, we have had some incredible meals in Sedona. There are many restaurants that highlight the cuisine of the area:

Which is More Affordable? Sedona vs Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon can be extremely affordable to visit, especially if you already have a National Parks Pass. If you don’t, you can buy an annual National Parks pass ($80) or a 7-day single site pass to the Grand Canyon.

Other than food, lodging, and 1 or 2 activities, there isn’t much else to spend your money on at the Grand Canyon.

Sedona is an easy place to spend more money on an adventure. The lodging can be more expensive if you opt for one of the luxury resorts.

Additionally, the wealth of activities, shopping, and food options tend to be very enticing which can add up quickly.

In general, both locations can be affordable, but the more activities you add, the more expensive the trip can become. We find that these expenses tend to add up more quickly for us in Sedona than in the Grand Canyon (Kelsea does love a spa day 🙂 )!

Who Wins Sedona vs Grand Canyon?

Sedona and the Grand Canyon are both unlike any other place we have been to.

To fully enjoy everything Sedona has to offer, we suggest staying for a minimum of 3 days. That will give you enough time to enjoy all the food and shopping along with the Red Rock environment.

The top 3 hikes, Devil’s Bridge Trail, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon should not be skipped. Add on a jeep tour, a visit to the Chapel of the Holy Cross, a vortex tour, and wine tastings, and you have a full vacation.

The Grand Canyon will provide you with one of the best panoramic views you have ever seen. There are many viewpoints that give you a different view of the canyon and the Colorado River below.

Unless you are doing an overnight hiking trip into the canyon or rafting on the Colorado River, you can see everything on the South Rim in 2 days/1 night.

Our recommendation would be to spend a week seeing both Sedona and the Grand Canyon! Start the week with 3 days in Sedona, then head to the Grand Canyon for 2 days.

If you have more time, we highly recommend adding a visit to Page, Arizona area to see Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Lake Powell (less than 3 hours away).
