Best Lisbon to Algarve Road Trip Stops

The region between Lisbon and the Algarve is known as Alentejo. Alentejo is characterized by its rich agricultural fields, vineyards, and cork oak forests.

Alentejo’s history is visible in its medieval towns, ancient megalithic sites, and Roman ruins, making it a fascinating area for cultural exploration and relaxation amidst nature’s tranquility.

We highly recommend taking your time on your Lisbon to Algarve road trip and stopping by at least a couple of these Alentejo towns.

A majestic peacock perches on stone ruins with intricate arches at a historical site in Evora, framed by a backdrop of golden autumn leaves under a clear blue sky.

Some of the towns we’d recommend overnights in, and others you could just stop by if you’re short on time!

Here are our favorites, in the order you’d stop at them on your Lisbon to Algarve road trip:

Evora

Evora is our favorite Alentejo town and the #1 Lisbon to Algarve Road Trip stop we recommend making.

Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its well-preserved Old Town, which offers a window into Portugal’s rich history with landmarks like the Roman Temple of Évora and the Chapel of Bones.

Its historical depth is further enriched by a blend of Roman, Gothic, and Baroque architecture.

Interior view of the Chapel of Bones with walls adorned with human skulls and bones, creating a somber, historic atmosphere. A must-see on your Lisbon to Algarve road trip!

There is a lot to see in Evora and the surrounding area so we recommend a full day and overnight here. When you get to Évora, find a spot in this conveniently located parking lot right on the fringe of the old town.

We highly recommend jumpstarting your journey with a guided walking tour. The guide shares amazing stories and history that you would miss otherwise.

Post-tour, we recommend a lovely lunch at Páteo.

In the afternoon, head out on an adventurous trek to the “Portuguese Stonehenge” with an archaeologist. The Evora Megaliths are really cool, and the archaeologist does a fantastic job bringing their history to life.

A captivating view of Almendres Cromlech, surrounded by majestic cork trees, against a backdrop of serene landscapes, blending history and nature in perfect harmony.

Round off your day with dinner at the charming Alegrias e Vinho Tinto Botequim, and settle in for the night at the elegantly situated Templo Boutique Hotel.

Beja

Beja, Portugal is known for its captivating blend of Roman history, medieval architecture, and great wine.

The imposing Beja Castle is the star of the show! The well-preserved medieval tower, one of Portugal’s tallest, has amazing views of the Alentejo plains.

The imposing Beja Castle stands tall under the clear blue sky, a historical landmark on the route from Lisbon to the Algarve, offering a glimpse into Portugal's rich medieval past.

Additionally, Beja is surrounded by beautiful wine country. We recommend taking the time to partake in this wine experience at Grande Prova Honrado Vineyards, just to the north of Beja.

The wine is great which they create via the ancient technique of producing wine in clay pots. We found this process fascinating.

Beja is a must-visit for those seeking an authentic Portuguese experience. We recommend at least a half day to explore the Castle and the old town. If you want to partake in the lovely wine, extend your stay to a full day!

Mértola

Mértola is a beautiful town perched on a cliff overlooking the Guadiana River, close to the border with Spain, and is worth a stop on your Lisbon to Algarve road trip itinerary.

Its well-preserved Islamic heritage, including the mosque converted into a church, makes it a unique example of the Islamic influence in Portugal.

Mértola’s annual Islamic Festival further highlights its multicultural history and it a wonderful tradition to be a part of. It is celebrated in May!

The picturesque town of Mértola, Portugal, perched on a hillside with white buildings overlooking the tranquil waters of the Guadiana River at sunset

In addition, Mértola is by the Guadiana Valley Natural Park which has great hiking! Our favorite hike is this hike which goes along the Guadiana River and has great views of Mértola.

Lastly, the wonderful wine region continues into this area. Include this wine excursion with your hiking and exploring of Mértola to round out your full day here!

Monchique

Monchique, Portugal, is best known for its stunning mountain landscapes and its thermal springs. This is the perfect stop on your Lisbon to Algarve road trip for those seeking wellness and relaxation.

Monchique’s rich artisanal traditions, including woodwork and medronho (a local spirit), add to its charm.

When in Monchique, we recommend taking time to explore the local art shops. Our favorites are the ceramics at Studio Bongard and the WoodSpirit Gallery

A serene woodland stream gently flows through a lush forest, flanked by stone steps and vibrant green foliage, creating a tranquil natural oasis.

In addition to exploring the shops, be sure to adventure into the surrounding mountain range of Serra de Monchique. Our favorite hike is the 4.8-mile loop trail to Foia Viewpoint and Penedo do Buraco Waterfall.

When staying in Monchique, opt for a nicer hotel with thermal spas. We highly recommend the luxurious Monchique Resort!

Silves

Silves, Portugal, is celebrated for its rich Moorish heritage, notably its well-preserved red sandstone castle, Silves Castle, which is among the best-preserved Moorish forts in Portugal.

The city’s historical significance, ancient architecture, including the Gothic cathedral, and the annual Medieval Fair (August), make it one of our favorite stops on a Lisbon to Algarve road trip itinerary.

A robust, red-brick medieval castle tower under a blue sky, with the Portuguese flag flying atop, showcasing historical architecture.

When in Silves, we recommend this private jeep safari to the historical highlights of Silves. The guide is local and does a terrific job bringing the history of Silves to life. Plus, it is really fun and you get to explore some off-the-typical-path places!

In addition to the jeep tour, be sure to check out the Silves’s market, the Museu Municipal de Arqueologia de Silves (really cool!), and some of the great restaurants (we recommend the seafood platter at Marisqueira Rui).

End your Silves day by staying at the wonderful Quinta da Luz – the boutique experience is truly lovely!

Tips for Driving on Lisbon to Algarve Road Trip

Driving in Portugal offers a unique way to explore the country’s stunning landscapes and historic towns.

In general, we found driving in Portugal to be a breeze! The roads, especially the highways, are really well maintained.

Busy traffic at a roundabout in Portugal, with travelers navigating their way from Lisbon to the Algarve.

There are 3 things we would recommend being prepared for:

  1. Speed limits vary by area, so keep an eye out for signage. If you speed, you will get a ticket a few weeks later from your rental car provider (they give tickets from cameras monitoring speed).
  2. Toll roads are common, especially on highways, and they can be paid electronically. Double-check that your rental car has the toll monitor. The fees will be charged when you return your car. They can add up!
  3. Parking can be challenging; look for designated parking areas. Some parking can be free, but be prepared to pay for parking by meter or at a parking deck in some places.

Have a great and safe trip!
