Day 1 – Discovering Lisbon’s Charms

Hello and welcome to Lisbon! On your first day, we understand you might be shaking off a bit of jetlag. That’s why we’ve planned a light yet exciting start to your adventure.

Your main mission today? Immerse yourself in Lisbon’s heart, exploring the historic neighborhoods of Alfama and Baixa.

To truly capture the spirit of these areas, we can’t recommend it enough that you join a guided walking tour. The stories you’ll hear about Lisbon’s past are as captivating as the city itself!

We learned a lot about Lisbon and its fascinating past on the tour – it is definitely time well spent.

Statue of a historical figure on horseback at a square in Lisbon, with intricate sculptures at the base against a blue sky with fluffy clouds.

For those who’d rather not navigate Lisbon’s famous hills on foot, a Tuk-Tuk tour is a fantastic alternative. You’ll still get all the great insights and stories, just with a little less legwork!

Post-tour, we suggest delving deeper into Alfama. Don’t miss the stunning views from Miradouro das Portas do Sol. And while you’re there, why not grab a quick espresso at a quaint local café?

A sweeping view over the rooftops of Lisbon's Alfama district, with the Tagus River and the dome of the National Pantheon in the distance. The perfect first day of the Lisbon and Algarve itinerary.

To cap off your day, join the amazing Treasures of Lisbon Food Tour. It’s not just about tasting; it’s about learning the stories behind Portuguese cuisine.

This experience will give you a delicious head start for the rest of your 5 day Lisbon and Algarve itinerary!

Day 2 – Lisbon’s Waterfront Wonders

Day 2 in Lisbon calls for some waterfront wanderlust! Lisbon is on the beautiful Tagus River, and there are a lot of sites worth exploring in this area.

Start your day at the bustling Time Out Market. This food market houses booths by Lisbon’s most renowned chefs and local food artisans. It is a treasure trove of Portuguese flavors!

Time Out Market is a lively place to go in Lisbon for groceries or snacks

Next, hop on a Tuk Tuk Belem tour (they will pick you up at the market) for a charming ride to the picturesque neighborhood of Belem.

A must-try here is the iconic Pastéis de Nata at Pastéis de Belém. Trust us, we’ve tried many, and these are simply the best!

After the tour ends, keep hanging out in Belem. If your Tuk Tuk tour didn’t stop at Iglesia de Santa María de Belém, make sure to visit this stunning church.

While the Jeronimos Monastery nearby charges an entrance fee, this church is free to enter, and its architecture is truly impressive.

Kelsea and Nicholas enjoying a romantic sunset sailboat cruise in Lisbon with a stunning view of the coastline in the backdrop.

In the afternoon, treat yourself to a Sunset Sailboat Ride. It was one of our highlights in Lisbon – nothing beats the relaxation and spectacular views from the water!

Picking a reputable company is so important! Below is the company we trust to give you the best experience:
Rent a Boat – Lisbon Boat Tours and River Cruises

Wrap up your day with a delightful dinner at SUD Lisboa. The food is fantastic, and the views add an extra layer of magic to your meal.

Day 3 – From Lisbon to the Algarve’s Coastal Gems

Kickstart Day 3 with an exciting new phase of your journey – renting a car. Exploring Portugal by car will help you maximize your time on your Lisbon and Algarve itinerary.

For snagging a good deal on car rentals, we typically turn to Discover Cars. Opting for the coverage option adds an extra layer of peace of mind.

With your car keys in hand, it’s time to head towards Lagos. But first, a stop at the enchanting town of Carvoeiro awaits. Expect the drive from Lisbon to take 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Your first adventure here? Tackling the 7 Hanging Valleys Trail. Begin this picturesque hike at Praia da Marinha, a beach famed for its golden cliffs and turquoise waters.

Scenic view of rock formations along the Algarve coast with clear blue waters and a partly cloudy sky overhead.

The trail, spanning 4 miles, winds through seven valleys, offering moderate challenges and breathtaking views. It takes about 2 hours to complete, ending in Carvoeiro. We recommend grabbing a taxi back to your car instead of hiking back to save time.

For those who prefer a lighter stroll, Carvoeiro’s lovely boardwalk is a great alternative.

Refuel with a delightful lunch in Carvoeiro. We have a soft spot for Tapas da Vila’s savory delights and the irresistible gelato at Gelados & Companhia.

A smiling couple in orange life jackets enjoying a boat tour in a cave along the Algarve coast, with sunlight streaming in from the cave's opening.

Next, drive to Portimão, a short 30-minute journey, and embark on a boat tour. It’s a fantastic way to see the coastline from a different angle, including a visit to the famed Benagil Cave.

End your day with a drive to Lagos, about 40 minutes away. For accommodation, Hotel Marina Rio has always been our go-to for its location and amenities.

And for dinner? Marisqueira “O Perceve” never disappoints with their fresh seafood. It’s the perfect spot to end a day filled with exploration and beauty.

Day 4 – Discovering the Charms of Lagos

Day 4 is all about immersing yourself in the vibrant life of Lagos. This town is not just beautiful; it has a rich and complex history.

To truly understand Lagos, we recommend starting your day with an Old Town tour. It’s an eye-opening experience, weaving through the market, admiring the striking street art, and delving into stories about Lagos’s role in the slave trade and its evolving geography.

A street corner in Lagos, Portugal with traditional blue azulejo tiles adorning the side of a building, under a clear blue sky.

After soaking in the town’s history, it’s time for a seafood treat. Head over to the Pearl Food Trailer for some of the freshest oysters in town – it’s a quaint spot that’s big on flavor.

Next up, embark on a boat tour to Ponta da Piedade. This was a highlight for us!

Dramatic coastal cliffs with natural arches in the Algarve, with the ocean's turquoise waters flowing through them.

The tour takes you through magnificent rock formations and arches, offering a perspective of the Algarve that’s simply breathtaking. The water is pretty rocky so we’d stay away from the kayak tours.

Post boat tour, why not unwind on one of Lagos’s stunning beaches? We like Meia Praia and Praia Dona Ana – both offer the perfect backdrop for some relaxation.

To wrap up your day, join a local Food Tour. It’s really well done. You go to several restaurants, sampling a wide array of Algarve’s flavors with a guide who tells helpful stories.

We found this to be an incredible way to connect with the region’s cuisine!

Day 5 – Journey to Sagres, Portugal’s Southern Tip

On your last day, seize the opportunity to visit Sagres, the southernmost tip of Portugal. This place is a must-see!

To truly make the most of your time, consider joining a guided tour. This is an excellent tour company we recommend that offers a variety of options to fit your schedule.

If you’re heading back to Lisbon (about a 3-hour drive) on the same day, the “Half Day Sagres & Natural Park” tour is perfect. You might need to expand the menu on the link to find this gem.

If you’re lucky enough to have the whole day, go for the “Full Day Sagres & Natural Park” tour. Trust us, it’s worth it.

Both tour options will whisk you away to Sagres, where you’ll be greeted by the impressive fortress, breathtaking coastal views, and the chance to venture off-road into the picturesque countryside.

Ending your Lisbon and Algarve Itinerary in Sagres will be unforgettable. It’s the perfect finale of a journey filled with beauty and exploration!

Day 8 – Lagos Day Trip

There are a lot of excellent day trips you can take from Lagos. There are 2 we would especially recommend for day 8 of your Lisbon to Algarve Itinerary.

Our first recommended option is a Small Group Wine Tasting Tour. You’ll head a bit north of the Algarve coast to an area that makes some fantastic wine.

A guide will take you through the day so you don’t have to worry about transportation. It is a really lovely way to spend the day, enjoy great wine and food, and learn a bit more about the Algarve culture.

An assortment of port wine glasses in varying shades of amber and ruby, set on a wooden tasting table, reflecting a Portuguese wine tasting experience.

The second option we’d recommend is to explore the town of Silves by boat. Silves is a lovely town up the Arade River that has been critical in the Algrave’s history.

Our personal favorites in Silves are the castle (Castillo de Silves) and the market.

Day 10 – Lagos Water Fun Day

Let’s wrap up the last day of your Lisbon and Algarve Itinerary with some fun!

Head out on this epic Golden Coast Cruise with Lunch. You are guaranteed a great time! You’ll have a lovely lunch, and get to swimming, kayaking, and/or paddleboarding.

If you are in luck, you may even see some dolphins!

Afterward, either head back to Lisbon if needed (a 3-hour drive) or continue your water day at the beach! There are some fantastic beaches around Lagos, Portugal.

Here is a quick description of the best beaches:

  • Meia Praia: This is one of the longest beaches in the Algarve, stretching over 4 kilometers. It’s known for its vast expanse of golden sand and is ideal for long walks, sunbathing, and water sports. Meia Praia is just across the marina and easily accessible.
  • Praia Dona Ana: Famed for its stunning cliffs and crystal-clear waters, Dona Ana is a picturesque beach that’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling. It’s about a 25-minute walk from Lagos Marina.
A scenic beach view with golden cliffs and turquoise waters, with footprints in the sand leading to the sea, capturing the beauty of the Algarve coast.
  • Praia do Camilo: A smaller beach known for its secluded feel and breathtaking scenery, Camilo is accessed by a long stairway that leads down to a sandy cove framed by rocky cliffs. It’s a bit further from the marina, but the views are absolutely worth it.
  • Praia do Pinhão: This beach is a hidden gem known for its quiet atmosphere and beautiful natural setting. It’s a great spot for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy some tranquility.
  • Praia dos Estudantes: A charming beach with unique rock formations and a small Roman bridge. It’s close to the town center and offers a peaceful spot for relaxation.

When is the Best Time to Visit Lisbon and the Algarve

The best time to visit Lisbon and the Algarve depends on your preferences.

  • Spring (March to May) offers mild temperatures and fewer tourists, ideal for sightseeing.
  • Summer (June to August) is warm, perfect for beach activities, but expect large crowds.
  • Autumn (September to November) has pleasant weather and fewer visitors, making it a relaxed period for travel.
  • Winter (December to February) is generally mild, especially in the Algarve, and is quieter for tourism.

Each season has its unique charm, so consider your travel preferences when planning your trip.

Personally, we like the October to March months. We prefer activities more than lounging on the beach, so the smaller crowds and mild temperatures make this the ideal time for us!

Getting Around for Your Lisbon and Algarve Itinerary

In general, we recommend getting a car. Why? It will help optimize your time so you can be in control of your own timing.

Driving in Portugal offers a pleasant experience with its excellent road infrastructure, clear signage, and generally easy parking.

We prefer renting cars through Discover Cars for various reasons:

  1. They consistently offer competitive prices
  2. Their platform allows for easy comparison of different rental companies, including details like their location relative to the airport
  3. To ensure a stress-free trip, we always opt for the coverage plan. It adds an extra layer of comfort, especially when traveling abroad, as it covers any minor damages like car dings in parking lots, letting us focus on enjoying our trip

  2. Bacalhau: Salt cod, often served in various styles like Bacalhau à Brás (shredded with onions and potatoes).
  3. Sardines: Particularly popular in the summer, grilled sardines are a local favorite.
A tray full of Portuguese pastéis de nata, the famous custard tarts, displayed in a bakery case, with a golden-brown crust.

Language in Portugal

Portuguese is the official language of Portugal.

For those interested in picking up some Portuguese before embarking on your Lisbon to Algarve itinerary, YouTube offers some great introductory resources.

It’s important to note that the Portuguese spoken in Portugal differs from Brazilian Portuguese, which is more commonly taught in language learning apps like Duolingo.

Internet in Portugal

For seamless internet access in Portugal, we opted for Airalo’s eSim Card, which doesn’t require physical installation and offered us outstanding service throughout our trip.

Airalo provides affordable internet options for your entire Lisbon and Algarve trip, potentially costing as little as $4, a price likely lower than daily international plans from usual providers.

Its ease of setup, coupled with reliable coverage, makes Airalo our top pick for staying connected in Portugal.

Money in Portugal

Portugal, as a member of the European Union, uses the Euro as its currency.

While we were able to use credit cards for most of our transactions, around 90% of the time, it’s still wise to carry some cash for occasions where cards might not be accepted.

Packing Tips for Lisbon and Algarve Itinerary

For your Lisbon and Algarve itinerary, where you’ll be on the move frequently, it’s crucial to pack smartly. Opt for lightweight and easy-to-carry luggage to avoid the inconvenience of lugging around heavy bags.

✈️ What’s the best site to buy flights to Portugal?

For finding cheap flights to Portugal, we recommend Kayak. Their awesome multi-city flight search and handy price notifications help us save big, allowing us to splurge on other adventures once we arrive.

TAP Air Portugal is usually our airline of choice while in Portugal.

🚐 Should I book tours in Portugal? Do the guides speak English?

We LOVE taking tours in Portugal.

We prefer to book our tours on Viator and GetYourGuide for easy searching, trusted reviews, and transparent pricing. We always filter for the tours that are offered in English.

For free walking tours in English, we always book through GuruWalk.

🚑 Should I buy Portugal travel insurance?

100% YES! Portugal has a publicly funded healthcare system known as the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), which provides universal healthcare coverage to all Portuguese citizens and legal residents!

Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. We recommend Safety Wing – they provide general travel coverage as well as medical!

💧Can you drink the water in Portugal?

Sometimes! In many areas of Portugal, the water is safe to drink. However, there can be variations in water quality from one location to another.

In some rural or remote areas, or in older buildings with outdated plumbing systems, water quality might not be as high.

For an extra layer of protection, we recommend always using a LifeStraw Go Series to stay safe and hydrated.

🎫 Do I need a visa for Portugal?

Likely Not! US passport holders don’t need Portuguese visas for travel less than 3 months. If you plan to stay for more than 3 months, you will be considered a resident and must have an entrance visa.
