Is Gibraltar expensive to visit for a vacation?

Gibraltar is an amazing destination, situated on the Iberian Peninsula between Europe and North Africa. It has a unique mix of cultures, sights, and sounds that make it well worth a visit.

But there’s one thing you may be wondering: Is Gibraltar expensive?

The answer is both yes and no. When we visited, we were a little worried about how expensive Gibraltar would be based on the relatively high accommodation prices we saw.

What we found was that prices in Gibraltar are definitely higher than those found in the rest of the Iberian peninsula, but they’re relatively in line with the UK or US (and sometimes cheaper!).

That said, it’s still possible to keep costs low when visiting Gibraltar without sacrificing your experience. In this article, we’ll provide recommendations on how to do just that.

Plus, we will supply you with a sample budget for low-cost, moderate, or luxury travelers so you can plan and have an idea of what to expect! Now, let’s dive into the details ➡️

Is Gibraltar Expensive to Visit?

Gibraltar is not the most expensive place to visit, but it is also not the cheapest.

The first thing to note is that Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and has prices more comparable to the British rather than their Spanish neighbors. So, if you’re traveling from Spain like we did, the sticker stock feels a bit bigger.

However, if you’re traveling from Britain or the United States, the prices are going to feel pretty standard and in some cases, very reasonable.

Let’s dive into a sample budget for a trip to Gibraltar, tips for keeping costs low, and some average costs in Gibraltar so you can decide “Is Gibraltar expensive to visit for a holiday?”.

We always recommend people take 2 to 3 days to visit Gibraltar. It is a great destination for a long weekend!

Tips for Traveling on a Budget in Gibraltar

If you need the answer to “Is Gibraltar expensive to visit” to be no, we recommend a few specific things to make sure you can avoid unnecessary expenses.

1. Park in Spain or Choose a Hotel with Parking

Traveling to Gibraltar can be an exciting adventure, but it can also pose some challenges, particularly when it comes to parking if you are driving to Gibraltar.

Here’s why you might want to consider parking in Spain or choosing a hotel with parking in Gibraltar to cut costs:

  • Challenging Parking in Gibraltar: Parking can be hard to find in Gibraltar due to limited free spots and reserved street parking for residents. You may have to opt for paid parking, which can be expensive.
There is limited parking in Gibratlar so parking in Spain can help keep cost down when answering Is Gibraltar Expensive to Visit.
  • Accessibility of Public Transport: If you park in La Linea, Spain, you can walk across the border and then take the public bus in Gibraltar. This can be a cost-effective and convenient alternative to driving and parking in Gibraltar.
  • Hotel Parking Advantages: Choosing a hotel with parking in Gibraltar can save you the hassle of looking for a parking spot, and it could potentially be cheaper than paying for parking elsewhere.

It’s important to consider your own needs and budget when deciding where to park or whether to choose a hotel with parking.

2. Opt for Walking Tours Over Van tours

There are a lot of epic tours in Gibraltar that will really enhance your trip.

Some are definitely more expensive than others… specifically the van tours. For this reason, we recommend opting for the walking tours or bike tours over the van tours. You will get all the same great info for a fraction of the cost.

Plus, by walking or biking, you will be able to adventure to places like the Windsor Suspension Bridge which is not accessible on a van tour!

Picking a reputable company is so important! Below is the company we trust to give you the best biking experience in Gibraltar:

If you’d like to keep expenses lower but also want to avoid walking or biking up the over 1,000 feet of elevation change to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar, take the cable car!

Is Gibraltar expensive to Visit? One of the main attractions, the Cable Car, costs $44 per person.

While the cost per ticket isn’t cheap, you can really cut down on time this way and save your legs. Considering the ticket price includes the entrance to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, the cost of the actual cable car is about $20 a person.

Lastly, instead of taking a van tour to Europa Point, use Gibraltar’s convenient public transportation. The Gibraltar Bus Route 2 will get you there from Main Street! The bus runs every 15 to 30 minutes.

3. Split Meals and/or Picnic

Meals can start adding up in cost while on a trip, which can make Gibraltar expensive for a holiday.

A great way to avoid this is to split meals. We found the portion sizes of most entrees in Gibraltar to be quite large! For us, we could split an entree at lunch and be satisfied.

Additionally, there are many beautiful parks and beaches all around Gibraltar. These are the perfect places to relax while enjoying a picnic.
