Wondering how long to spend in Gibraltar?

We’ve got all the information on how long to spend in Gibraltar!

We traveled to Gibraltar at the beginning of 2023 to discover what this British Overseas Territory has to offer. During our long weekend in Gibraltar, we experienced and learned SO much and had a blast doing it.

After our experience and talking with locals, we can confidently recommend 2 to 3 days to explore Gibraltar. You can easily spend an entire week in Gibraltar, but 2-3 days are really necessary to see the highlights.

A long weekend is good for families, couples, or solo travelers looking to explore Gibraltar.

Now we know how precious your time is, so let’s dive into how to make the most out of 1, 2, or 3 days in Gibraltar.

Welcome to Gibraltar! How long to spend in Gibraltar is a great question that we will answer.

How Long to Spend in Gibraltar

Answering how long to spend in Gibraltar can be a tricky question. While the British Overseas Territory may only be a few square miles, there is a lot of history to see, things to do, and great excursions to take!

Luckily, there is an easy way to divide up your days for efficient exploration. Let’s dive into what each day exploring Gibraltar could look like!

1 day in Gibraltar – “The Rock Day”

The Rock of Gibraltar is by far the most famous reason to visit Gibraltar – and for good reason!

“The Rock” as they call it stands at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It’s a monolithic limestone promontory that stands 1,398 feet (426 meters) high.

The rock has been a strategically important site throughout history due to its position at the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea. The Rock of Gibraltar is known for its rich history and unique ecosystem.

A full day exploring the Rock of Gibraltar is part of the answer to how long to spend in Gibraltar.

There is a ton to explore on the Rock of Gibraltar! We will dive into each of the sites shortly but first, let’s talk about how to explore the Rock.

We recommend any of these 4 options:

1 – Take a Walking Tour of the Rock

A walking tour is an excellent way to explore the Rock of Gibraltar!

By walking you will have no restrictions on exploring sights like the Moorish Castle, the Mediterranean Steps, and the suspension bridges.

Plus, the small-group setting ensures personalized attention from your guide. This is our ideal way to explore the Rock to make sure you are getting all the details in a laid-back way!

Mediterranean Steps are a great hike in Gibraltar.

2 – E-bike Tour

Exploring the Rock of Gibraltar by e-bike is another great option! By using an e-bike, you will still have most of the flexibility that walking permits without quite as much effort.

Your guide will fill you in on all the history around the Rock, which we found really brought the area to life! We were shocked by just how much there was to see and learn around every turn.

Plus, e-bikes are eco-friendly, emitting zero to low pollutants, and offer a healthier way to sightsee while getting some exercise. It’s easy, fun, and good for the environment – what’s not to love?

3 – Van Tour

As we’ve said, the Rock of Gibraltar is TALL – 1,398 feet tall to be exact. Walking or biking up and around the Rock is not the best option for everyone and we get that!

Luckily, there is an excellent van tour option to explore the Rock. Like the other tours, you’ll be led by a knowledgeable guide with fascinating tidbits about the Rock’s history and culture.

The Van tours have the advantage of taking a bit less time as well so this is a great option if you have less than a day to really explore the Rock.

Gibraltar van tours can be a great way to explore if you only have one day in Gibraltar.

4 – Self Guided Tour

While a guide is an excellent way to learn a ton about the Rock and Gibraltar, you can still learn a lot of this information by reading signs and placks at all the sites.

By exploring the Rock of Gibraltar this way, you’ll be free to spend as much time as you want in each place which is a great bonus.

Now that we have covered how to explore the Rock of Gibraltar, let’s dive into what you will see and why the Rock deserves a full day of your Gibraltar itinerary.

Gibraltar Cable Car

The Gibraltar Cable Car begins next to the Alameda Botanical Gardens and ascends all the way up to the top station of the Rock of Gibraltar.

This thrilling ride takes just 6 minutes! We took the Cable Car to the top to begin our walking tour and we would say it is 100% worth it.

Gibraltar Cable Car is a fun way to get to the top of Gibraltar's top thing to do, the Rock of Gibraltar.

It is a great way to have a spectacular view and not wear out your legs before really exploring the Rock. Do be aware, however, that it is a bit on the pricey side.

Upper Rock Nature Reserve

The Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar is effectively all the green area on the Rock of Gibraltar. In fact, the Upper Rock Nature Reserve covers about 40% of Gibraltar’s land area.

The reserve is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including the famous Barbary Apes. Essentially the entire time you’re exploring the Rock of Gibraltar, you are in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.

There is a fee associated with entering the reserve. The fee goes towards the continued conservation efforts of this beautiful reserve!

Apes Den and The Famous Barbary Macaques

The Barbary Macaques are arguably the Rock of Gibraltar’s star attraction and Europe’s only wild monkey population.

They roam freely, but they’re most concentrated around the Apes’ Den.

These clever creatures have learned that backpacks often mean food, so it’s best to keep everything inside your bag, even water bottles. To avoid any surprise monkey encounters, wear your bag on your front.

Gibraltar Monkeys are everywhere.

Remember: they’re wild animals, so it’s important to respect their space while enjoying their antics.

Watching them play is an absolute delight! We stumbled upon a lively bunch of youngsters and watched for a long time, captivated by their infectious fun.

O’Hara’s Battery

O’Hara’s Battery, named after General Charles O’Hara, is perched at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar.

Used during both World Wars, it was last fired in 1976 and has since been preserved for tourism.

This artillery battery offers one of the best views in Gibraltar with an impressive vista in all directions.

We did find, however, that many people left their trash in this area which was a sad distraction from the cool history and view.

O'Haras Battery is at the top of the Rock of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar Skywalk

The Skywalk was a former military lookout that is now a state-of-the-art glass platform at the top of the Rock by O’Hara’s Battery.

The glass platform juts out over the edge of the Rock so you can see down to the Mediterranean and Gibraltar’s Beaches.

Why did the Jedi visit the Gibraltar Skywalk? Because they heard it was the only place where you can truly ‘Force’ your way to a stunning view!

In fact, the Skywalk opened in 2018 with Mark Hamill, the actor who plays Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, cutting the ribbon.

We found the glass to have gotten a bit clouded so you can’t see through the bottom super easy, but the view out is still fantastic!

Mediterranean Steps

The Mediterranean Steps in Gibraltar are a nature lover’s delight and a hiker’s challenge.

Starting at Jews’ Gate, to the South of the town of Gibraltar, this trail takes you on a scenic journey all the way up to O’Hara’s Battery.

Mediterranean Steps on an epic walking tour of Gibraltar.

This path and steps were used throughout history to allow access to various defensive positions around the southern part of the Rock during war times.

Now, the path offers breathtaking views and an intimate encounter with Gibraltar’s unique flora and fauna.

You do not have to hike up all the Mediterranean Steps to enjoy them, however. There are a few sections you can explore at the top by the Gibraltar Skywalk.

St. Michael’s Cave

No trip to Gibraltar is complete without experiencing St. Michael’s Cave!

St. Michael’s Cave in Gibraltar is home to an immersive light and sound show called ‘The Awakening’.

Throughout the cave, lights are used to illuminate the awesome rock formations. Truthfully, we were apprehensive that the lights might be off-putting but we found that they really added the the experience!

At the end of the cave, there is an amphitheater where a seated Lightshow plays every 20 minutes, which is magical!

💡Note: There is a gift shop, cafe, and restrooms at St. Michael’s Cave!

Windsor Suspension Bridge

The Windsor Suspension Bridge is perched between two World War II artillery batteries. On the bridge, you get breathtaking views over the city, bay of Gibraltar, and beyond.

The bridge is about 233 feet long and across a 164-foot gorge.

We found the bridge to be pretty steady for a suspension bridge, but if heights are not your idea of fun, there is a walking path where you can skip the suspension bridge.

The Great Siege Tunnels

The Great Siege Tunnels in Gibraltar, also known as the Upper Galleries, are a testament to human ingenuity during warfare.

These tunnels were carved by hand during the Great Siege of the late 18th century to strategically place cannons for optimal defense.

The Great Siege Tunnels are an awesome thing you'll see while exploring Gibraltar for one day.

Today, these labyrinth-like tunnels are a very cool attraction. The tunnels are very long (and downhill!) so we recommend walking for 20-30 minutes before turning around to exit.

The Moorish Castle and Tower of Homage

The Moorish Castle and Tower of Homage in Gibraltar were built by the Marinid dynasty. They stand as symbols of Islamic rule in Medieval Spain.

Dating back to the 11th century, the Castel and Tower are unmissable when you enter Gibraltar’s Casemates Square.

We found the steps to be narrow when climbing to the top but you’re rewarded with breathtaking views.

Moorish Castle Gibraltar is a prominent visual on the Rock.

The Moorish Castle and Tower of Homage will likely be your last stop on the Rock of Gibraltar! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Dinner in Ocean Village

End your day with a wonderful dinner in the Ocean Village neighborhood of Gibraltar.

Ocean Village in Gibraltar is a vibrant, bustling waterfront resort nestled between two stunning marinas and the iconic Rock of Gibraltar. This lively hub offers over 20 oceanfront restaurants and bars, two casinos, and residential and commercial developments.

We had great meals here, but our favorite dinner was at Little Bay Bar and Indian Restaurant. If you are a fan of Indian food, don’t skip this spot, and be sure to grab one of their epic cocktails!

Fantastic dinner in Ocean Village while on a long weekend in Gibraltar.

2 Days in Gibraltar – “The City Day”

Now that you’ve explored the iconic Rock of Gibraltar, it is time to sightsee around the rest of Gibraltar!

Almost all of these activities can easily be walked to from the City Center.

The exception is Europa Point – this destination, while technically walkable, is a bit of a long walk (1 hour and 2.3 miles).

If you do not have a car to get to Europe Point, we recommend either grabbing a taxi or taking the public bus. The Gibraltar Bus Route 2 will get you there! The bus runs every 15 to 30 minutes.

English Breakfast at Queensway Quay

English breakfast south of Spain? Yes, please!

When we visited Gibraltar, we had been in Spain for several weeks, and while we loved Spanish food, we were very excited for a change of pace.

Gibraltat’s full English breakfast is the perfect way to start your city day! We 10/10 recommend heading to Queensway Quay Marina to enjoy your breakfast with a view.

We ate on the patio at Moniques Bistro & Cafe, and it was lovely. We felt truly ready to tackle the day after savoring our breakfast with a view.

Walking Tour

After you’ve properly fueled up for another excellent day, take a FREE Walking tour of Gibraltar’s City Center.

GuruWalks is our #1 way to find fantastic free walking tours. This GuruWalk with Francis was nothing short of exceptional!

Francis is a Gibraltar native who is proud of his community and their shared history. The stories Francis tells truly brings Gibraltar to life.

The changing of the keys is a great ceremony to see on Saturday in Gibraltar.

We learned SO much on this walking tour. There were many things we had passed before the tour that we learned the significance of during the tour.

Don’t skip this walking tour with Francis – and while it is free, don’t forget to tip!

(psst – they use the Gibraltar Pound as currency)

Europa Point

After your walking tour, take bus #2 down to Europe Point to check out the iconic Europa Point lighthouse and the impressive Ibrahim Al-Ibrahim Mosque.

The views from Europa Point are impressive, though a bit windy. On a super clear day, you may be able to see across the sea to Morroco in Africa.

There are a few memorials to check out, a playground for kids, bathrooms, a concession stand, as well as a large cricket pitch.

Europa Point Lighthouse is a beautiful place to visit.

We were excited to be able to see a game while we visited Europa Point, as we had never seen cricket played in person before.

There is also a nice walking path by the edge! We recommend bringing a windbreaker or jacket with you.

High Tea at The Rock Hotel

High Tea – another English tradition observed in Gibraltar!

The Rock Hotel is an iconic Gibraltar hotel known for the number of famous people who have stayed there. In fact, they have several walls of photos dedicated to displaying many of the celebrities!

They also have high tea from 4pm to 6pm daily.

At this lovely tea, treat yourself to some scrumptious sandwiches with classic fillings. And of course, you can’t miss out on the freshly baked scones with strawberry preserve and clotted cream.

Plus, there’s a delightful selection of afternoon tea cakes to satisfy your sweet tooth!

The Rock Hotel's patio is a beautiful place for High Tea during 2 days in Gibraltar.

We strongly recommend making a reservation ahead of time! The view from tea is stunning, as well as the quality of the experience, so it books quickly.

An Evening of Fun

After tea, rest up before going out for an evening of fun in Gibraltar! There are a surprising number of fun things to do at night in Gibraltar.

We suggest starting the evening off with dinner off Main Street. We found a cool place, Vault 13, which is in an old bank which was a very unique thing to do in Gibraltar!

Once you’ve finished up with dinner, you can either head for some fun at the King’s Bastion bowling or take the party up a notch by enjoying one of Gibraltar’s casinos, bars, or nightclubs.

Additionally, there are numerous options for an entertaining night, including trivia nights, karaoke bars, and escape rooms. There really is an option for everyone!

3 Days in Gibraltar – “The Sea Day”

WAHOO! We’ve made it to the last of your 3 Day Gibraltar itinerary! Your third day in Gibraltar should be devoted to exploring Gibraltar by sea.

Gibraltar is almost entirely surrounded by water. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the east of Gibraltar while the Atlantic Ocean is found to the west of Gibraltar.

The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Gibraltar from Morocco in Africa.

In these waters, you will have both amazing views as well as the potential for fantastic marine life observation.

Let’s dive into your options for your sea day!

Dolphin Safari

Going on a dolphin safari in Gibraltar is a fantastic experience! The bay, due to its location and climate, is home to Common Dolphins, Striped Dolphins, and Bottlenose Dolphins.

Additionally, many species like the Pilot Whales migrate through the area and can be spotted from time to time!

Tours typically last one to one and a half hours, depending on how far out the dolphins are.

Dolphin watching is a perfect activity while visiting Gibraltar.

It’s a fantastic way to see Gibraltar’s dolphins in their natural habitat while also taking in breathtaking views of The Rock of Gibraltar, Spain, and Africa (weather permitting).

Beaches

Gibraltar has some STUNNING beaches! Gibraltar’s beaches come in a few different varieties but our favorite beach is Catalan Beach.

Catalan Bay is a charming bay and former fishing village located on the eastern side of Gibraltar’s Rock. It has an old-world charm with colorful houses lining the beachfront, which we found to be picturesque and charming!

This beach is quite popular with both Gibraltarians and tourists due to its wide sandy shores and scenic beauty.

Getting to Catalan Bay is easy. It’s about a 25-minute walk from Ocean Village or there is a parking lot.

When planning a day at Catalan Bay, remember to pack your swimwear, towel, sunblock, and perhaps a picnic if you wish to spend the entire day there.

Catalan Bay is a great beach in Gibraltar to spend a day at.

We found the bay to have decent facilities, including some restaurants and kiosks, where you can buy food and drinks.

Catalan Bay is a great option to relax after exploring Gibraltar and/or taking a dolphin safari.

Yacht Day

If sand isn’t your thing or you are looking to maximize your on-water time, take a private yacht adventure!

Kelsea is happiest when she is on the water and found this private Yacht experience to be the ideal way to enjoy one day in Gibraltar.

On the Yacht, you’ll be able to swim, snorkel, and paddle board whenever you’d like. Plus, the awesome crew will do their best to find some of Gibraltar’s dolphins during your day.

Sailing on a private yacht is by far one of the best Gibraltar tours.

You will also enjoy lunch and refreshments while on board. This is truly the best way to relax on your final day in Gibraltar!

Gin Experience

Once you’ve completed your sea day, a nice cocktail is an excellent way to begin the evening of your three days in Gibraltar!

Gibraltar is home to only 1 distillery – Spirit of the Rock. They specialize in Gin production. On their Gibraltar Gin Experience tour, you will be able to try 6 of their gins.

Plus, an expert will share their knowledge of Gin production with you and Gibraltar’s history with alcohol.

This Gin tour is the perfect way to either start an evening of fun or bookend an awesome day!

Gibraltar for a Week

While we recommend 2 or 3 days for how long to stay in Gibraltar, you can definitely expand your visit to a full week!

We’d suggest taking the 2 day Gibraltar Itinerary provided and then mixing in the 3 day Gibraltar itinerary activities with some additional fun!

Our first suggestion is to head to Gibraltar’s botanical garden. It is truly beautiful and filled with stunning flora and statues. Plus, the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is also in the gardens so you can add on some zoo fun.

Gibraltar Botanic Gardens are right off Main Street.

If you’re looking for good beach time, you can easily spend the whole week beach hopping around Gibraltar.

For those who enjoy shopping, Gibraltar is duty-free making it a great place to shop. Main Street is lined with all the top European brands where you can get good deals without paying the extra tax.

If you’re interested in venturing out, you can always take day trips from Gibraltar! It is easiest to rent a car and drive to your destination.

Within 2 hours, you could go from Gibraltar to Malaga, Gibraltar to Seville, or Gibraltar to Cadiz. You can either drive back the same day or take an overnight in Spain.

You could also take the ferry from Gibraltar to Morocco and visit Tangier. Be sure to pay close attention to the ferry schedule as the ferry only runs once or twice a week. Check out the ferry times here.

If you’re looking for a relaxing week with a mix of activities and history thrown in, a week in Gibraltar is an excellent idea.

Gibraltar Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit Gibraltar

The best time to visit Gibraltar largely depends on your preferences for weather and crowd sizes.

If you’re looking for the warmest weather, the hottest months are June through August. However, keep in mind that these are also the peak travel periods, so the area will be more crowded.

For a balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists, the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) are when we would recommend visiting! The climate is lovely during these times.

If you don’t mind a bit of rain and prefer milder temperatures, you might consider visiting in the winter months. While it does rain more frequently during this time, it typically doesn’t last long.

We traveled to Gibraltar in the winter and really enjoyed our time. It was a bit overcast one day, but it was still warm exploring; and, while we did not go in the water, we enjoyed some beach time!

We loved visiting Gibraltar in the winter due to the lack of crowds and chilly by pleasant weather.

Since Gibraltar can be a bit expensive, we got some great deals on hotels in the off-season.

We ranked all the Best Cheap Hotels in Gibraltar thoroughly if you are looking to save money on your accommodations! 🏨

No matter when you decide to visit, Gibraltar’s Mediterranean weather is lovely year-round. Just remember to pack accordingly!

How to Get To and Around Gibraltar

Due to Gibrlatar’s size, it is a very easy place to get around. We found that we could walk to wherever we needed to go in less than 15-20 minutes 95% of the time.

Outside of the Rock of Gibraltar, the main city area of Gibraltar is relatively flat, so walking is easy.

For those few further destinations like Europa Point, the Gibraltar bus system is an easy and convenient way to get around. There are also taxis and van tours available.

If you are driving from Spain, we recommend either parking in Spain and walking into Gibraltar, looking for a hotel with parking, or paying for a parking deck. There is very little parking available in Gibraltar, and most of it is zoned for residents!

Gibraltar's Airpot that you walk across to enter.

Lastly, while Gibraltar is a British Overseas territory, they do still drive on the right side of the road, so transitioning between Spain and Gibraltar is a breeze.

Where to Stay in Gibraltar

Finding the right accommodation in Gibraltar can be a challenge due to limited options. However, we have carefully selected a handful of perfect choices for you!

    • Rooftop pool and terrace overlooking the Gibraltar Strait
