Make sure to snag a window spot on the left for the best view. If heights give you the jitters, no worries – just pick a spot to the right, closer to the rock, and focus on the rock as you ascend.

There are one-way or roundtrip tickets available. We chose a one-way ticket to the top and then enjoyed a leisurely walk back down, visiting the sites all over the Rock.

This combo was an absolute treat, and we highly recommend it. When you purchase your ticket, go ahead and add the Upper Rock Nature Reserve so you can explore once you get to the top!

The whole experience takes about 30 to 45 minutes, but the memories will last a lifetime.

3. Watch the Famous Barbary Macaques Play

Meet Gibraltar’s most famous residents, the Barbary Macaques!

These tailless monkeys, originally from Morocco, have made Gibraltar their home, making it the only place in Europe with a wild monkey population.

With around 300 of these playful primates scattered across the Upper Rock area of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, you’re bound to encounter them wherever you go!

Watching their lively antics is a joy – just ask Nicholas who could’ve spent an entire day observing a group of young Barbary Macaques play.

They’re generally not aggressive, but beware, they have a knack for sniffing out food in bags and backpacks.

A handy tip? Wear your bag in front and keep all items tucked inside, even your water bottle(s). If a macaque decides to get friendly, stay calm and it’ll move along.

4. See the Ceremony of the Keys on Saturday

Every Saturday at noon, step back in time with the Ceremony of the Keys, performed by Gibraltar’s Re-enactment Association.

The keys were used to unlock and lock the North gate at sunrise and sunset for over 140 years, a ritual that has now become a cherished tradition.

Did you know there are more than 30 miles of tunnels throughout the Rock of Gibraltar? Yeah – we didn’t either!

One of our wonderful tour guides called the Rock “swiss cheese” due to these tunnels. You can explore them via the entrance to the Great Siege Tunnels.

These tunnels were built during the late 18th-century Great Siege and served as a protective haven for cannons, guarding Gibraltar against the relentless assaults of French and Spanish forces.

Today, this captivating network of tunnels is a remarkable destination for both history enthusiasts and casual tourists alike.

12. Snap an Amazing Photo at the Gibraltar Skywalk

Imagine being 1,115 feet above sea level on a glass structure – that’s the Gibraltar Skywalk for you.

The Skywalk offers an unforgettable panoramic view to grab an epic picture. On a clear day, you may even be able to see Morocco.

During our visit, we noticed the glass was slightly cloudy, detracting a bit from the transparency of the floor, but the picture-perfect views were undiminished!

This bastion, the King’s Bastion, is located on the western side of Gibraltar. It has been restored and now is a very cool place with many businesses.

Imagine trekking up Gibraltar’s iconic Mediterranean Steps, a 1.6-mile trail that weaves its way up the Rock of Gibraltar.

This moderately challenging hike will take you through rocky terrain, starting at Jews’ Gate and ending at O’Hara’s Battery.

With an elevation gain of approximately 780 feet, it’s not for the faint-hearted but trust us, the spectacular views at the top are worth every step.

Expect the journey to take around 90 minutes to two hours, but don’t rush – there are plenty of photo opportunities along the way!

Remember to wear sturdy shoes!

20. Run or Bike Around Gibraltar

Gibraltar, thanks to its size, is a biker and runner’s paradise!

You can run or bike the 10 miles around the perimeter of Gibraltar. On this route, you’ll go through tunnels, have beautiful views of the Mediterranean, and pass many of the sites along the way.

The most popular route is through the town and out to Europa Point and back. On this route, you stay to the west of the Rock, eliminating the sections with long tunnels.

If you’re up for a challenge, you can always climb the Rock itself for a great workout!

21. Have a Lovely Guinness in Irish Town

Did you know Gibraltar has an Irish Town? Yep – it is located on the road “Irish Town”.

This street is a block over from Main Street and is adorned with many Irish pubs. Be sure to wander over there for the classic Irish fare and live music.
