Spain is a beautiful country to explore, and traveling from Madrid to Barcelona, or vice versa, is a fantastic way to see two of Spain’s major cities!

We made the trek between both cities during our 2023 Spain road trip and absolutely loved our time in both – each town has its own unique charm!

There are several options for traveling between Madrid and Barcelona, all with their own pros and cons.

In this article, we outline the various travel methods, how long they take, what their benefits are, and how to book them so that you can make the right choice for your next adventure!

Everything you need to know to go from Madrid to Barcelona

Madrid to Barcelona Overview

Before we dive into the details of each Madrid to Barcelona transportation option, let’s look at a quick overview.

Madrid to Barcelona Distance

The distance from Madrid to Barcelona is 627 kilometers (roughly 390 miles).

Madrid sits in the center of Spain. In fact, they have a marker in one of the main Madrid squares, Plaza Sol, which marks the “center” of Spain. However, the actual center of Spain is slightly south near Toledo, but it is still nearby.

Barcelona is located on the northeastern coast of Spain, specifically on the Mediterranean Sea, and it is situated closer to France.

Both Madrid (MAD) and Barcelona (BCM) have large airports, making it easy to fly between the two cities.

The total flight time is 1 hour and 20 minutes. If you get to the airport 1 and a half hours before your flight leaves and it takes 30 minutes to leave your destination airport, this puts your total time to travel from Madrid to Barcelona by plane at 3 and a half hours.

Additionally, this can be a very inexpensive way to get there! Depending on when you are traveling, you can find flights as cheap as $22 one-way between these cities.

Flying into Barcelona

For the cheapest price, look at flying with Vueling. Vueling is a Spanish airline offering budget flights. As with all budget airlines, your ticket can become more expensive the more luggage you have.

We have flown Vueling several times and have always had a good experience. Typically, we pay to check our bags (even though they are carry-ons by American airline standards, they are too big by the Vueling definition), and our tickets tend to cost about $100 a person.

If you are going for a quick way to travel between Barcelona and Madrid, flying is a great option!

Madrid to Barcelona by Train

Another great option for traveling from Barcelona to Madrid or Madrid to Barcelona is by train. The train system in Europe is truly remarkable, and the train between these 2 cities is no exception!

The regular train from Madrid to Barcelona is operated by Renfe and takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes. Tickets can start as low as €9 but can easily go up over €100.

If you are willing to travel during non-peak times (very early or very late), you can typically get pretty inexpensive tickets.

Depending on the type of train, you will get 2 to 3 pieces of luggage included. Just look at what is included with your specific ticket during checkout. We recommend buying your ticket directly from Renfe to avoid any additional fees.

Total train travel time between Madrid and Barcelona should take about 3.25 to 4.5 hours, making it the same time as a plane if not a bit faster! Depending on the timing of your travels, it may be very reasonably priced.

Madrid to Barcelona by High-Speed Train

In addition to the regular train, there is also a fast, or high-speed, train from Madrid to Barcelona. This train is also operated by Renfe and typically takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.

There are more high-speed train time options than regular, so booking this shorter option does not pose extra difficulty. The tickets are, however, a bit more expensive.

We find them to be 10-20% more than the regular train ticket price.

Train between Madrid and Barcelona

There are generally about 32 trains (regular and fast) between Madrid and Barcelona a day, so as long as you plan in advance, you can pick the time and price that is best for you!

If you want to go from Madrid to Barcelona and back in one day, you can take a high-speed train on a tour with your train tickets included.

On a one-day tour from Madrid to Barcelona, you will see Plaza España, The Gothic Quarter, Passeig de Gràcia, and the Sagrada Familia.

Madrid to Barcelona by Car

The drive from Madrid to Barcelona by car takes 6 hours. On this drive, you will pass through some beautiful Spanish countryside. The drive is mostly on the A2 highway, which makes it quite easy.

When driving, be sure to watch your speed! In Spain, your speed is being captured by cameras. If you are speeding, you will get a ticket a few weeks later.

We rented a car for our Madrid to Barcelona trip using Discover Cars. They are by far our favorite way to rent a car.

Road Trip Stops Between Madrid and Barcelona

One of the best parts of driving is that you can stop along the way! A few places we recommend stopping are:

Mirador Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente

The Mirador Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente is located just 10 minutes off Exit 118 on A2.

This scenic observation spot has a stunning view of a bridge, a waterfall, and the river Dulce.

There are also great trails right by it that are perfect for getting out of the car and stretching your legs. Just follow the directions on the information panel – it has great information on the area as well as several walking routes that can be done.

Zaragoza

Zaragoza is a vibrant and historical city that is well worth a visit during a trip from Madrid to Barcelona.

Located about halfway between the two cities, it offers the perfect place to take a break and explore Spain’s rich culture.

Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon and the fifth-largest city in Spain. It is home to the amazing La Seo Cathedral, a 12th-century Roman Catholic church that was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001.

Other notable attractions include the Aljaferia Palace – an 11th-century Moorish fortress that now houses the Regional Parliament of Aragon – and the Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar, a Baroque church built in 1681.

Mas de Colom – Casa Borges

Mas de Colom is a rural property situated in the town of Tàrrega that covers approximately 70 hectares and is used for growing nuts and olives. The Borge Foundation, which owns the property, is focused on farming sustainably.

They have opened up the estate to the public to teach about modern farming and how to do it in a way that is ecologically sustainable. Additionally, they do tastings to appreciate the very best of olive oil and nuts.

The best part of all? It is free! You need need to make a reservation though – you can do so here.

Madrid to Barcelona by Bus

The slowest but cheapest way to travel between Madrid and Barcelona is by bus. The coach bus operator, Alsa, has 15+ buses per day traveling between the 2 cities.

Depending on the bus, the bus ride can take anywhere from 7.5 hours to 8 hours and 15 minutes. We have seen tickets range from €5 to €40. Booking in advance helps keep the ticket cost low!

When booking, pay attention to the type of bus. Some are regular coach buses while others are double-deckers.

Additionally, some buses allow you to block the adjoining seat, travel with a pet, and/or bring a bike or surfboard.

What is the easiest way to get from Madrid to Barcelona?

It really depends on what you are looking for!

Going for speed? Both trains and planes are great options since they take about the same amount of time. We tend to see which one is cheaper and go with that.

If money is a concern, the bus can be really cheap if you don’t mind a bit longer of a ride. Plus, bus naps can be a great way to rejuvenate during your travels!

Wanting to explore the countryside? Definitely drive! This way you can go explore when you see something that is of interest.

💧Can you drink the water in Spain?

Sometimes! In many areas of Spain, the water is safe to drink. However, there can be variations in water quality from one location to another. In some rural or remote areas, or in older buildings with outdated plumbing systems, water quality might not be as high.
