Syracuse, also written as Siracusa, is one of the best day trips from Catania south of the city. We absolutely loved our time in the city.

Delve into Syracuse’s historical tapestry, from the grandeur of the Greek Theater and Ear of Dionysius cave at Neapolis Archaeological Park to the charming markets and delectable seafood.

We stumbled upon The Basilica of the Madonna delle Lacrime while walking around Syracuse, and it was a very cool structure to go into. It almost reminded us of going into a Star Wars spaceship! Entry was free, just please don’t disturb anyone in there praying.

We personally thought these were some of the best ruins we have seen in all of our travels! The main reason it isn’t ranked higher is because of the long drive to get there.

On Ortigia, we wandered through alleys that revealed local markets, the stunning Cathedral of Syracuse, and the legendary Fountain of Arethusa.

Also in Ortigia, we had the best sandwich in all of Sicily at Caseificio Borderi. Do yourself a favor and make sure to try one! 🥪
