How do I get from Palermo to Taormina?
You can go from Palermo to Taormina by bus, train, car, and private transfer.
We provide detailed information for each mode of transportation below so that there is no guesswork for you! Before we dive into the details, here is a quick overview:

💡We do NOT recommend just taking a day trip to Taormina as you will spend most of the day traveling. Instead, stay a night or two in the area.
Distance from Taormina to Palermo
The distance from Taormina to Palermo is 264 kilometers or 164 miles.
The most direct route will take you through the center of the island and will take at least 3 hours and 15 minutes.
To take this tour, you’ll cross Sicily from Palermo (the northwest coast) to the East Coast, turning north at Catania. From Catania, Taormina is another 45 minutes north.
The other option is to take the coastline east from Palermo and then back down to Taormina.
This route will pass you through Messina, the Port city that connects Sicily to mainland Italy via ferry. The distance is about the same at 278 km.
Palermo to Taormina by Bus
There are no direct buses that travel from Palermo to Taormina. 🚍
Instead, the best option is to take the bus from Palermo to Catania. The route between Palermo and Catania is serviced by two bus operators, Sais Autolinee and Flixbus.
Sais Autolinee operates about 16 round trips per day from Palermo to Catania. The travel time between the two cities is approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes, and the cost of a one-way trip is around €14. You can book tickets through Sais Autolinee’s website.
Flixbus also offers two roundtrip options between Palermo and Catania each day. The travel time for Flixbus is about 3 hours, and the cost is €16 for a single trip. Flixbus’s website is a simple way to book your tickets.
Once in Catania, you will grab a bus from Etna Transporti, who is a local operator that drives from Catania to Taormina. The bus leaves every 15-30 minutes from 7:00 to 22:00 every day. This bus ticket is about €5 each way.
Palermo to Taormina by Train
As with the bus, there is no direct train from Palermo to Taormina. 🚆
To take the train, you will travel the coastline from Palermo to Messina. In Messina, you will transfer and take the train to the Taormina-Giardini train station.
The total train and layover time is typically 4 and a half hours and costs €17.
This train station is outside of the town of Giardini and at the base of the hill that Taormina is on. You can walk up to Taormina, but it is not recommended as it is quite the hike.
Instead, take the Taormina bus. You can find the timetable for the bus on www.interbus.it. You can purchase tickets from the bus driver and the ride will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Palermo to Taormina by Private Transfer
A private transfer will be the fastest route to travel from Palermo to Taormina without renting a car.
To book a private transfer ahead of arriving in Sicily, you can book online. This private transfer is a good way to travel in comfort.
Alternatively, you can wait until you are in Palermo and see if your hotel concierge can help. Since this is not a guaranteed option, we recommend having a backup plan just in case they do not have an option for you.
Palermo to Taormina by Car
Our favorite way to travel from Palermo to Taormina is by car. We love the convenience and freedom it provides you.

First, you can choose which route you’d like to take, through the island or on the northern coast. We tend to make a big loop.
We go through the center of the island on the way from Palermo to Taormina and then take the northern coast when we go back to Palermo.

When taking the direct route through the island, the drive takes 3 hours and 20 minutes. The majority of the drive is on a highway, making the drive a breeze.
You must stop to take in the view of Mount Etna. Our favorite stop is Cratères Silvestri. You can also hike up Mount Etna with a guide!
When taking the coastal route, the drive takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. This drive gives you a chance to see the incredible beaches of Sicily.
When driving this route, our favorite stops are the coastal cities of Messina and Cefalù.
Palermo to Taormina by Day Trip
In all honesty, we DO NOT recommend taking a day trip between these two cities.
A day trip would involve 7 hours of driving, which makes for a very long day and might take away from the experience.
Instead, we would recommend traveling between Palermo and Taormina and staying in each city for a few days then taking day trips from there.

How Many Days in Taormina
At a minimum, we recommend 2 days to explore Taormina and the other cities on the hilltop, like Castelmola.
Outside of the gorgeous views around every corner, Taormina is full of history. You’ll want to have time to explore the ancient theater, go on a walking tour, and pop in the historic churches.
Plus, you must save time to relax by the pool and eat the fantastic Taormina food!
Personally, we always save time for a cooking class. Taormina is one of the best places on the island to take a Sicilian cooking class. 🧑🍳
1 day is not enough time to experience all Taormina has to offer.
If you want to have more of an adventure, we recommend 3-4 days in total. This gives you enough time to visit nearby cities like Catania as well as take a day trip like on a Mount Etna Wine Tour.
